Ladies, I’ve taken the plunge. I’m letting it go gray. I’ve been coloring it for over 30 years now, and I’m so done with that. Also, it will be nice walking into the convenience store at night and not having to worry about ... you know, men!

Anyway, my friends are telling me it’s not gray, it’s silver. That’s fine with me except I’ve never mixed metals, always wore gold-tones, so there will be some adjusting to do.

Here are the pros:
1. No more pouring stuff on my head once a month. Even henna, which I’ve been using for years, has become this huge chore.

2. My hair has stopped falling out!!!! I mean, it seems to be healthier.  After a shampoo, the shower drain has, I would guess, 75% less hair in it. For this alone, I am doing the Snoopy Happy Dance.

3. The texture seems to be thicker. Now this could be just me being dillusional, which happens, but I’ve always wanted thick hair and now I have it!

4. With my henna red hair, I wore a lot of peach colors, autumn colors, and rich browns, even though I was lusting after pinks. With silver hair, I’m going to go crazy with pinks. Pink shoes, pink hoodies, pink under brow highlighter.

Here are the cons:
1.  I don’t want to cut it short because I still love my medium-length bob. So I’ve got about 4 inches of silver hair followed by about 6 or 7 inches of badly faded henna. Plus one night I thought it might be a good idea to put a blond streak in there to soften the “line” between the silver and the red henna, so now there are blond streaks in there, too. It might actually look hip if I were 14.

2.  Yes, with all that silver coming in, yes yes yes I look older. That is the Big Issue. I look a lot older. I guess my mantra for that is: “So?”

The thing is, I feel   younger because I'm freed up from yet another troublesome chore (pouring stuff on my head every few weeks), and I also feel younger because my hair is thicker.

And I feel safer walking into the convenience store in the middle of the night for chocolate ice cream. Men still hold the door open for me, but they don’t look at me or try to start conversations.

I LOVE life after 40. It's ... well, FABULOUS!

Namaste,
Suzann

    • Thanks, Termagsea !!! I think you're right - get the ragged ol' henna out and let the silver do its thing.

Termite , I do know what you mean! Thanks so much for writing.

      Lots of love,

    • hello ladies, in fact i have been trying to be courageous in taking the decision of not coloring my hair again and i left the white hair to appear for about 4 months now. i want to be free of having to color it every month or so but actually i started to look older and i am 42 now, so what r ur opinions shall i go gray at 42 or wait for some time?!

    • Serene - good question. I’m answering it via a new blog because there’s so much to consider.

      Peace,
