My husband and I were out at our newest favorite place tonight and decided to sit at the bar and order from the tapas menu.  It is a fancy-schmancy place with wonderful atmosphere.  At the opposite end of the bar was a man and a woman who were sitting quite close to one another and were pretty lovey-dovey.  I didn’t pay too much attention to them until they had the absolutely sinful dessert delievered to them.  This is when i noticed that they were behaving a little strangely.  The woman was holding the man’s head in her hands and it didn’t appear that she was being amorous!

Our food was brought to us and we set to eating and talking, not paying attention to anyone.  When we were finished and ready to leave, i noticed the bartender scraping this beautiful dessert into a “to-go box“.  The woman stood and began to help the gentleman stand, put his coat on him and lead him out of the bar as he stumbled and leaned on her.

We learned that this man was on a first date with this woman.  He bragged to the cocktail waitress that he’d done “15 car bombs” before he’d gotten there (I don’t know what those are, but i’m assuming they‘re shooters of some kind).  The waitress also informed us that while he was there, this man purchased a $500 wine safe to impress his lady-friend.  The waitress said she tried to talk him out of committing tonight and instead let her know on Tuesday.  He would have none of it.

On our way home, i told my husband that I would have called the man a cab and left him there if i was on a first date that ended up as that one did.  I admit that it’s easy for me to say since i’ve been married nearly 20 years and i’ve been out of the dating game so long but, let me ask you ladies...would you tolerate that kind of date?  In my younger days i might have let it go but there is no way, at the age of 46, i would tolerate that on a first date...or any other date!  Our relationship had better be pretty solidly established if i’m expected to scrape you off a barstool and babysit you!

That’s MY opinion..........what’s yours?

    • If my date was already hammered on 15 shots, we would not have made it to dessert, I’d have been gone!

    • I’ve been on one of those types of dates, but it wasn’t drunk on alcohol, he was a pig and drunk on himself!  First of all, i had to pick him up because he didn’t have a car (I was young and stoooopid then).  Then on the way there he kept telling me how “lucky” i was that i was able to go on a date with him because he could have any woman he wanted (don’t ask me why i didn’t leave him by the side of the road at that point, thinking back with 20/20 now).  We got to the restaurant and let me just say that his table manners would have made a hog vomit!  you could hear his lips smacking from across the room. and he used his fork like a shovel!  he ate enough for 3 and the only thing he didn’t do was belch and pass gas at the table, he seemed to do everything else, including pick his teeth with the knife!  i smiled serenely through it all and when he said he would DEFINITELY call me again at the end of the night, i smiled as i drove off and never answered the phone...

    • Psalmist...many years ago, i used to watch Love Connection.  One woman who was in search of her match told Chuck Woolery that she did NOT want a “BMW“...a “black man walkin‘!”  Your comment about needing to pick up your date reminded me of that.  I laughed SO hard!

    • Psalmist, I am reading your post and thinking of the movie Daddy’s Little Girls, when Gabrielle Union was out on the blind date with the guy (who plays Daryl on The Office) and he was going on about his “music” career and if she was paying since it was a fancy restaurant, and then he asked the waiter if they had “scrimps!”

I wouldn’t have even called this one a cab. It probably would’ve taken a while before he’d notice she was gone anyway.

    • y‘all, the dating pool has been drained and put in storage for the season.  i have sworn off dating altogether (that was just one in a hurricane season of dating).  i now go to work, go to church (when i’m supposed to), i go out with friends and family.  if a gentleman approaches me, i’m cordial but extremely cautious, and i employ Madea’s methods.  if they even look slightly askew, i immediately say, “back up, i don’t have time for games, this playground has been closed for YEARS!” and I’m not joking about that one!

I’m glad I don’t have to deal with all of that.

    • OMG.... first date nightmares.... yes I have ducked a few and done a runner etc; but your dates Teeky and Palmist they are "classic" ....men drunk are not nice full stop ...........but why 15 vile drinks beforehand he obviously wasn't expecting either a second date or any action as nothing would work with that level of alcohol.

I'm about to start dating again so I've picked an old friend – we have danced about a bit previously but I thought rather go with someone I know than start that who search .....We have just had a great weekend away and what was fun was I didn't need to do any explaining etc; We just roared our heads of laughing ....

Teeky you deserve a first date medal for that one .... takes first date nerves to a whole new level

Tory, you poor thing, I can’t imagine this happening.
      Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!

These guys needed to have a big “L’s” posted on their foreheads to forewarn any potential dates!

Pre dating I’m just going to check I’ve had mine removed as we all know can’t see it yourself - need an expert opinion!

    • Tori and Psalmist those are just horrible.

My worst date was when I was still in high school at our Homecoming. I always dated guys older than me. Most of the girls that I hung out with did also.

Here we are all dolled up and our dates are three sheets to the wind. MY date starts dancing with one of the Mom’s that was suppose to be watching the group. OMG... you should of seen them it was Dirty Dancing at it’s best. HE was all over her and the MOM was all over him.

I sat there mortified and I can NOT tell you how many people started coming over and saying I am sorry.

Of course when he started coming out of his drunk spell he was saying sorry baby, etc, etc.

We never saw each other again.

I hated dating, I hated high school. I think this was one of the reasons why!
