A new survey reveals that parents are often the ones who introduce their children to the practice of tanning despite evidence that tanning beds cause cancer.

The survey involved about 1500 Ontario residents between the ages of 12 and 17. Results showed that more young people are tanning than before – 8 per cent use tanning beds compared to only 5 per cent in 2006. One-quarter said that their parents first introduced them to tanning and more than half, said that their parents pay for their indoor tanning sessions.

Provinces in Canada including Nova Scotia and British Columbia have banned indoor tanning amongst youth. Other jurisdictions including California, Australia, Britain and France have done the same.

It's thought that indoor tanning remains popular because many people don't understand the risks. [Link Removed]

    • My first trip to a tanning bed was in 1982. I was preparing for my prom. And I continued to tan until my late 20’s. Now I know better.... And thankfully have been able to convince 1 of my 2 daughters to NOT tan. I will take my chances at looking pasty or orange before I subject myself to the risks.
I do think this has helped both my daughters to consider the consequences before taking action.

    • I grew up in Southern California so just being outside gave me a tan when I was young. Recently on the news there was a mom in New Jersey who took her 5 year old to a tanning salon. She’s now facing child endangerement charges. The whole tanning thing is just strange to me.
