At the end of this year, Maui Gold pineapples will be gone for good. This is a very sad day for our island and for the State of Hawaii. The economic trickle down effect will be great. There are long standing businesses here which rely on our local pineapple as the life blood of their companies. The Maui Land and Pine Company has been losing money and eliminating employees for awhile now. Being a resident of Maui I know there is more than meets the eye, however. Steve Case, the founder of AOL and his pal David Cole have dismantled agriculture on the Valley Isle in favor of high end time shares and other real estate deals that have gone sour in these economic times. The pineapple industry and the generations of families that have made it thrive for nearly 100 years have become mere casualities. The entire flavor as well as the landscape of Maui will be altered forever.
