Every year at the end of March I visit my mother for about a week.  Mom never comes north so it’s the only way i’m going to see her.

This year i was searching the web for decent air fare and came across a really good fare through Travelocity.  Just to avoid missing any details, i usually have my husband help me out.  This year i figured i could manage this by myself.  I was pleased with finding the air fare for just under $190, all taxes and fees included.

Next came the car rental.  For reasons that i may share at another time, i decided to rent a car instead of relying on my mother’s.  My husband was poking around in search of a good rate and requested that I sent him my flight info to help decide which rental company to use.  He called a little while later and said, “Geez...you‘re getting in late on Wednesday!”  I said, “What?  I’m leaving at 6:30AM.”  Then it dawned on me...i hit the wrong button and chose the later flight!  So, of course i’m going to call Travelocity to try and move my time.

Here’s the kick in the patootey:  in order to move my departure time, it would cost me ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY DOLLARS!  Can you imagine?  My husband tried calling USAir and was told that since i used Travelocity, there was nothing that USAir could do.

So, i learned my lesson.  I will never use another fare-finding service again.

    • Those can be so tricky. When I flew to Mexico, I had to be careful not to pick the flight that had a layover, and then arrived the next day!

    • LOL Feather. ‘wrong-button history’ - I used to work with people who were known for hitting the ‘stupid’ button on the phone (as in hangup on the caller... accidentally on purpose.) And when they would call back (I worked in network trouble shooting and in the industry I was in, the end users where known for airhead syndrome) the answer was always the same “oh, I am sorry I must have hit the wrong button.” Now mind you - *I* never did this... but it was quite comical (and stress releiving) for my co-workers. estatic

As for flight deals - I always triple check before I hit submit. I know they don’t allow backsies but when you can get a ticket for less than half the going rate, it is so worth it to me. But I am a cheapskate... penny pincher...tight wad. Well, on some things anyway.

There’s always been so much hype about the gnome..glad someone found out something different..even though I’m sorry you got a raw deal...

    • I’m leaving at 6:30 at NIGHT and arriving in Orlando at 11:30!  I’m stuck with it...unless i want to pay $180 to change it...which i don’t.  I’ll make the best of it, though.

    • Daphne,

In the UK we have two “low cost” budget airlines (joke) Ryan Air and EasyJets you can only buy their tickets via their site ....they are a real con because you can spend ages making sure you haven’t missed anything or ticked a wrong box and bam the site freezes so you go back and they have jacked the price up by around £20 plus if you don’t tick various boxes they charge you £7.50 for luggage and £28.50 for insurance ......

So what was cheap is now a fortune plus they advertise £1 flights but that is one way so it’s £200 to come back and the timing is crap .....

Now just pay the full price works out cheaper - they make money from mistakes.

It cost me £300 instead of the advertised £60 to go to my parents ........the petrol in a Hummer wouldn’t have cost that much !

    • UKGirl...that “legal” scam tactic is everywhere and it’s disgraceful!  The local airport touts a direct flight to Orlando for $69 each way!  Sounds great, huh?  Then you have to pay $15-$25 for your seat!  Um...so if i STAND, i don’t have to pay?  Then there is the luggage fee.  What does the airling think...that we‘re gonna wear the same clothes for our entire trip?  Add the taxes and surcharges and the flight was over $230!!! (I can’t convert that to pounds...i can’t even find the pounds sign on my laptop!)

I’m learning everyday...the Gnome is Full of Crap!!!

    • I’ve now learnt that if I’ve got to use one of these sites I do a load of practise on the site and really read everything etc; otherwise you pay big time .....and a mass of patience.

Your $230 would be £167 at the moment its 73p to a $ it’s very expensive for us to visit but airfares to the US are nothing - I can fly 1st class to New York next for £300 which is £300 which is $409..........
