The saying "40 is the new 30" has never been truer than it is today.  Call them cougars, MILFS or whatever you'd like, women out of their 30s and into their 40s and beyond are hotter than ever.  Movie roles requiring sex appeal and depth are being taken by Hollywood's veteran leading women, many of which have dominated the spotlight for a decade and half or more.

Demi Moore

Cameron Diaz

Demi Moore made a fierce and highly talked about comeback in Charlie's Angels Full Throttle back in 2003.  Ms. Moore stepped out of the surf in a bikini showing that age had done nothing but good things for her, even after three kids and a lengthy absence from Hollywood. However, these facts didn't stop her from effectively taking the title of hottest woman in the movie, despite sharing the spotlight with other Hollywood hotties such as Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz.

Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts is still one of Hollywood's most treasured leading ladies for her elegance, beauty—not to mention a face we all can't seem to keep our eyes off of.  Her role in Duplicity, out in theaters currently, is to portray a sexy, intelligent and determined woman, a role that would be completely inappropriate to be given to any of Hollywood's young starlets.

Sarah Palin

But Hollywood isn't the only place sexy women over 40 can be seen. Sarah Palin rocked the election last year with her beauty and confidence.  This mother of five, at the age of 44, was the object of media attention both for her conservative politics and stunning looks.  Men lusted after her clean-cut look with sexy librarian glasses and a French twist that begged to be undone.  Women took equal notice of the would-be VP's appeal, clamoring after the glasses and hairstyle that was so alluring.

Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama also rocked the election with her chiseled biceps and enviable smile. She may be 45 but there is no evidence of age taking its toll on the First Lady.

Many of these ladies are also mothers, many having more than one child and showing a fearless determination to still be hot and relevant in the media.  Motherhood used to be the death knell to women in the spotlight; it was believed that once women crossed over into the care-giving role they could no longer maintain what sex appeal they once had.

Salma Hayek

Gwen Stefani

Madonna

Never has this been more untrue; Salma Hayek, Gwen Stefani, Madonna, Courtney Cox and Teri Hatcher are all proud parents but also some of the sexiest women employed in the entertainment industry.

Courtney Cox

Courtney Cox

In fact, Courtney Cox was just signed on as the lead in a new TV sitcom called Cougartown. Turning 40 is not the end of the glory years, it's merely entrance into an elite group of women who still hold their rank even four decades into life.

So ladies, don't dread the passing of the years as if they signal the end of your desirability, challenge yourselves to turn the tables on the 20-somethings and show that you still "got it."  Own your age and be proud that there is a generation of hotties out there that have been and continue to strut their stuff—with all the world's admiration.

    • Then there’s the other side of the 40ish woman.  There’s the 48 year-old woman who blogged her way, then email, into my 63 year-old husband’s heart.  She convinced him that I was just an old 69 year-old, and she would take care of him.  So, not only do cougars go after younger men, they also go after the older ones with money.  A lesson to women, know where the money is and have some control.  As I did neither, he now has all our assets snugly hidden away.  I never saw it coming.  Sorry to whine.  I have great children (not his) and wonderful grandchildren.  So everything is not completely dark.  I can’t even afford a good attorney.  He has been living with her for over a year.  Somehow, I think this will have a positive outcome.

    • I like this explanation of cougar, I also thought it meant something else and got offended when my partner refered to me with that word. I actually told him not to! but since it refer’s to the above I better tell him it’s OK.

    • I have always heard about how women are when they hit their 40s. I will be 44 in October and in the past year, I have come to acknowledge to myself and others as being happy with my innerself. And as far as cougars, I feel that a woman has to prove to herself and others that she is attractive to herself and others. I think that she also realizes that men that are around the same age or older do not know   that we need more than the basic relationship.
