Then: Ambush

Now: Ambushed

I went perfume shopping the other day.  Okay, I'll confess.  I wasn't actually shopping for a scent to spray upon my hot flashing skin, but that's where I ended up.  At the perfume counter in Bloomies, with a very nice saleslady well versed in the historical, sociological, psychological and physiological theories of perfume.

As it turns out, buying perfume is not as easy as it used to be.

My daughter knew exactly what she was looking for.  And so, like daughter, like mother, I decided I would buy the same bottle.  Why not?  I don't have a favorite brand and my daughter does have good taste.  Not to mention expensive, but that's another story.

Anyway, that's when I learned that wearing the same scent as someone you hang around with is an absolute no..no.  According to perfume etiquette, every woman must wear her very own fragrance.

Well, if  that's the case, then back in high school,  I along with everyone else I knew committed a huge "perfume faux pas" as we all wore the same scent: Ambush.   Which is described as a sharp, oriental, woody scent.  With a blend of lavender, jasmine, oakmoss, sandalwood and patchouli accompanied by fruity notes of fresh citrus, melons, peaches and plums.

We seemed to be just fine with this.  I was never confused as to who I was and never mistaken for someone else.  Although, it would have been nice if my crush did think I was one of the popular cheerleaders.  At least for a day or back then I would have even settled for a few hours.

But back to my current dilemma – finding a fragrance to call my own.  This entailed being ambushed with a  questionnaire the likes of those meme things that go around the Internet.  What's my favorite smell?  Am I a fruity person?  Spicy?  Citrusy?  What scent turns me on?  What smell makes me hungry?  What kind of candle do I burn when taking a bath?  What kind of soap do I prefer?   What element am I - air, earth, fire, water?  What's my  sign?

Honestly now.  All I wanted was a nice fragrance to mask the sweat which turns the back of my neck into a slip and slide and my armpits into a wading pool.

How about a vodka fragrance? I asked.  Or one with a blue cheese olive aroma?  I'd rather smell like I'd been drinking than a locker room.

In the end, I was too confused to buy anything.  And all the different smells, from coffee to chocolate to roses started to affect my thinking.

I left with a few samples.  And with the question zigzagging through my brain - If I were a scent what would it be?

What's yours?

    • I used to shop a lot for fragrances, too, Janie, and tried to keep a signature scent for long periods of time.  These days, though, I’m only interested in fragrances that are subtle and that the dogs don’t mind!  Guess I don’t really have a signature scent now.

    • I really enjoyed this one, Janie....and related to it...Once as an adult I had an obsession with Obsession....and that’s cuz everyone commented on how good I smelled...maybe they just liked me...now I’m afraid to offend anyone and who knows, everything changes......chemically, I mean. I tried Phermone years ago, but it didn’t seem to attract anyone...This was really well-written and I really enjoyed it... I almost got a hankering for Ambush...Loved it back then...Thanks, Janie

    • Linda - I like that about your dogs.  We certainly wouldn’t want our pets to turn against us!

Frannie -  When you find the scent that gets your man breathing on your neck, let me know!  LOL

Jer- I remember you and Obsession.  It was a great scent for you.

I like Casual myself. everytime I wear it everyone tells me I smell good.
What smells good on some stinks on others or myself. My mother wears Emeraude and it smells really nice on her, I put some on and I can’t even stand it, Yucko!
When I was in high school I wore Babe and always got compliments. Or sweet honestly by Avon now those make me smell like a cheap you know what.

    • I’m kind of a bath and body spray gal rather than perfume.  I’ve almost always got several bottles around the house and in my purse...like within reach of my keyboard right now is plumeria.  Rainwater and the really light ones are usually my favorites, but sometimes I go for the bolder ones like the aforementioned and mango!

    • Hmmm....when I was in high school, I loved all those scents by Yardley (remember Yardley???? haha!). I loved lemon scents. But now, I think I like this one by Este Lauder that has ‘linen’ in the title. Something like that. haha! I don’t like heavy scents, just something light.

And I love the smell of clean - so whatever that is. Good luck with your quest! :)

    • Gosh I love so many different perfumes.  I used to love Este Beautiful years ago.  I tried maybe a year ago and didn’t small anything like I remembered it used to.  I guess your body chemical changes over time???  I too used to love Obsession, same as Beautiful.  Doesn’t smell the same on me as it did years ago.  I don’t think I have a signature scent as I wear many.  Lately I love to wear Dolce & Gabana “The One” - I get tons of compliments on that and also Dolce & Gabana - “Light Blue” - again, tons of compliments.  Oh, I still love Halston from back in the day.

    • Pam - Yardley!  I haven’t thought of that in awhile.  As for linen, I try to stay away from any scent that reminds it’s time to change the sheets!

Angel - I do think our bodies change as we get older.  Mine certainly has.  I think it alters a little bit with each hot flash.
