Then: Cartoons

Now: CarTunes

Ah...those good old weekend morning cartoons. Remember those days?  The ones before cable TV, before 24/7 broadcasting.  When a station would go off the air and play that test pattern?  Well, back in those ancient times, cartoons aired only on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

And that's where my sister and I would be – in front of that small old fashioned television.  It didn't come with a remote control, let alone HD or DVR capabilities.  But it brought us into all sorts of fantasy worlds for a few wonderful hours each weekend.

Of all the cartoons, my favorite was the Jetsons.  That family that lived in 2062 in their Skypad, complete with holograms, robots and flying cars.  With each episode my imagination soared higher and higher.

Well, I have to say - move over Jetsons.  The world in which we now live is rapidly approaching that cartoon landscape, especially as it relates to cars.

It appears that the battery operated vehicle of tomorrow, while being better suited for our environment, may prove to be hazardous to our safety.  There is speculation that because we are so used to hearing the roar of traffic and the whir of engines that the silence of this future car, could confuse us into walking into on coming traffic.

Please!  This sounds completely insane to me, but years back I couldn't believe we would ever have to pay to watch TV.

So, of course, whenever there is the prospect of our welfare being in danger, out come the men in the lab coats.  Well, in this case the EV (Electro-Voice) Audio coats.  And these guys are currently hard at work on CarTunes, the sounds that will emanate from our chosen mode of transportation.

These will probably start off simple and with limited choices.  Just as cell phone ring tone options were when they were introduced to the public.

Remember when a phone simply rang instead of exclaiming "it's your mother-in-law" or playing a few bars of the "Theme From Rocky?"

Well, anyway, if this is the case, the sound emanating from our cars will be yet another option available when purchasing a new vehicle, along with rain-sensing wipers and massaging seats.

Imagine pulling up to your friend's house sounding like Barbra Streisand singing “People” or maybe flapping like a gaggle of flying geese.  Or like a booming thunderstorm.  Perhaps to the sound of popcorn popping.  Or with the energy of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.

As you can see, the possibilities are limitless.

I'd like to have my car sound like the Jetsons Theme Song.  After all, I used to pretend I was living in their world.

What about you?  How would you like your car to sound?

    • Interesting that you bring this up because I was just in Las Vegas and looking at the glass and chrome, bridges and escalators and thinking The Jetsons and wondering when a car would fly over!

So as far as my car’s theme song...huh...well, maybe it should match my ring tone, Bette Midler singing “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.”

    • Call me old fashioned, Janie, but I’d like my car to sound like... a car!  Maybe a jazzed up one, though.  I was just thinking about this subject yesterday when I was walking my dogs and a Prius sneaked by.  For their safety, I like to stop my dogs as far from the road as possible when a vehicle passes us, and I almost didn’t hear this one coming.

    • Well, I drive a Prius and have scared a few folks on my street while walking their dogs... so I totally understand!  I guess a car should sound like a car! Aren’t we confused enough by all the other gadgets that make sounds different than what they are?  I agree with LindaO. Old fashioned... more like, simple!  Remember the KISS principle?  Oh, and Happy Valentines Day!

    • I was watching “Back to the Future” a few weeks ago.  The one that was suppose to be in the future, when Michael J Fox was helping his kids.  That movie was made in 1985 and the future they went into was 2015.  We are almost there.  According to that movie we are suppose to have flying cars in 5 years.  Do you think we will get there?

In answer to your question Janie, I think I would like a car that had sensors, and any time anyone walked or drove too close to the car a police type voice would come on that says “Step away from the vehicle“.  Maybe that would help with drunk drivers, or people who refuse to stop using the phones or text messaging while driving.

PS I loved the Jetsons too!

I'd like my car to sound like a race car - I luvs the sound and feel of speed - what a rush.  Being that I have to be a good girl and not go over the speed limit, at least I could fantasize by hearing the sound that I'm going faster.  They don't give out tickets that say you can't sound like you're going fast can they as long as it's not too loud?

I would be open to the new cars. I’m sure I would get use to them, but I also like the classics. My granddad had a Lincoln Continental which I loved to ride in.

      Good blog.

I guese, from a real point of view, I really don’t care what my car sounds, as long as it does what it is supposed to do. I miss those old days of Saturday cartoons. They never got took for granted as you had to wait for them to come on. Sadly, I believe that today’s children, as much as they have or think they have, will never know just what they have missed out on back from those days

I got to rent a Chevy Malibu and it has the remote with auto start!! My Aunt has a Jag and hers has a button that you press and it starts the engine!
It’s great to reflect back on those memories..it’s funny just the other day I had mentioned to my kids that cartoons were only on the weekends for a few short hours. It was “our time” for TV, and it was ONLY 13 channels! I remember rigging our small 20 inch TV with a coat hanger to get HBO. Now that I think about it, HBO was free back then.

I am all for change! Change expands your mind to believe there are endless opportunities. I always tell my kids that I will be 120 years old and that one day, we will go on vacation to the Moon!

But talking about The Jetsons and futuristic, did anyone see the new Electrolux futuristic range requiring no pots or pans that was in the news recently—
