These are three poems I wrote yesterday, in answer to a challenge in a poetry forum I’m a member of.

“Dead Roses”

The petals, withered and dry
Crumble into the dust of memories
Their weary weight falling
From sere, blackened stems
The sick-sweet stench of death rises
As the breeze from an open window
Blows the memories away

“The Fire Died”

Passion’s flame once flared bright, between us
..............Then ignominiously it shrank
.............................And died
A spectacular death in glory’s blaze, no
Just a weak sputter, a flicker from a tear
I learned your smooth tongue and sweet-sounding words
..............I could never trust, and hurting
.............................I cried
Seeing the closet half empty, I see my glass half-full
With half the wash to do, half the mess and stress
Of your words I drank deeply once, their daily stream
..............Evaporated now by the heat of truth
.............................You lied

(Firefox won’t let me tab or space over for the lines!)

‘Ode to Lorena’

Mounted on the wall
It reflects the light
Of the setting sun
My pride and glory
What can I say?
What is mounted beneath
Shriveled and dead
Mute testament
To a victory
Hard fought, won
Another time
A past life
I give thanks
Raising my glass
Here’s To Lorena!
And,
A sharp kitchen knife
