Summer is here for people who live in the Northern Hemisphere. Air conditioning has become something that we can't live without. While we are enjoying the cool comfort it brings to us, have we realized that, like most other modern conveniences, air conditioning has its down sides, our health can be damaged if it is over used.

Nature has four seasons, human is part of the nature, only if the body operates harmoniously with the nature, we can live with health and longevity. Summer is the season of thriving and blossoming, body needs to remove the coldness and other wastes though letting out of some energy, such as sweating and evaporating. If you keep staying in the cool air conditioned environments, the body does not get change to accomplish its summer job, planting the seeds for future illnesses.

Traditional Chinese Medicine tells us that all the diseases are caused by six types of evil forces: they are: wind, coldness, dampness, dryness, hotness, and summer heat. Wind moves cold air, therefore, the number one and number two evils are both related to coldness. The most obvious problem can be seen of overuse of the air conditioning is that it aggravates the effects of arthritis and neuritis. It also causes trouble for those with sinus trouble, causing the heads to become blocked.

Modern studies have shown that the people sheltered with air conditioning are more susceptible to colds, flu and other minor problems. It has also been proven that the body experiences a certain amount of stress when it is forced to go from a boiling hot environment into a cool air conditioned one. The skin pores were wide open due to the heat, when the temperature suddenly and deeply dropped, the body has to quickly close them for self protection, this does not only add stress to the body, but also let in and seal the coldness inside, again, the seeds of the diseases.

The decision to use or not to use air conditioning is, of course, yours. Choosing pros and cons is also your own job. May be setting the temperature not below 78 degree Fahrenheit and stopping it once a while is a way to both get the benefits and avoid the detriments of air conditioning.
