The beauty of Europe lies not only in its architecture and history, but also in it's convenience of getting around from one country to the next. With conversion to Euros, traveling from country to country is easy and efficient. Unfortunately, for us Americans, the weak dollar doesn't allow for the extravagance of shopping as it once did. However, theaters, opera houses and museums still remain affordable enough for everyone who is eager to explore them.

Instead of staying in a hotel we occupied a small flat in the heart of Cannes. Amazing views of the marina, hustle and bustle of the street bellow, plus the two-minute walk to the beach compensated for the lack of amenities that we take for granted in the states.

Being centrally located we were able to travel to Monaco, Milan, San Remo, Portofino and small villages surrounding Cannes.

Cannes is referred to as a sister city of Beverly Hills, and the heart of the French Rivera. With golden beaches, incredible restaurants, and a festive night life, it is the prime destination of the rich and famous.

French Rivera Marina

A view from our appartment window allowed us to see this incredible view of the Marina and the French Rivera.

crepe

A French experience would not be the same without enjoying a Nutella Crepe, Sasha's Favorite.

French Girl

French Mademoiselle is enjoyin vanilla glasse during her lunch at the beach restaurant.

fireworks

Besides being famous for the Cannes Film Festival, Cannes has an incredible display of fireworks every year on July 14th in honor of French Independence Day.

The French Food

With heavy sauces, cheeses, breads and incredible desserts, I still don’t understand how the French retain their figure.

My favorite restaurant in the heart of old Cannes is Ciro (It’s an Italian Restaurant with a French flair)

Several dishes impressed me, one was a pasta made inside a parchment bag with muscles and shrimp. I will attempt to do this once I get home.  The chef would not share the recipe or even hint on the ingredients, but I think I can come close to imitating.

The other dish, as see in this picture is fillo dough stuffed with scallops in pink sauce. I’m sure this dish exceeds two thousand calories, but honestly the word diet should not be uttered during a vacation in France or Italy.

cookies

Another incredible dish that was served in this restaurant was Parmesan Aubergine served in a eatable bowl made from Parmesan cheese. This recipe gives you an idea how tasty this dish is, and if I figure out how to improvise the Parmesan bowl I will share the recipe with you.

If you ever visit Cannes you must go to the daily fruit and vegetable market that offers freshly picked treasures from the local growers.

Fashion

Fashion in Cannes is very casual during the day, and spiced with a fancy flare at night. With many nightclubs catering to the affluent crowd, it’s fun to watch a fleet of Lamborghinis and Ferraris pulling up in front of those clubs whose  proud owners resemble models from the pages of Vogue magazine.

All of the stores during the last week of July are displaying the sale signs, but even at 50% off the original high price tag, there is not much that will catch your eye without severilly damaging your pocket book.

Beaches

Beaches are the pride and joy of Cannes. With miles of private beaches you have a choice to pay a hefty price in the area of $25 to $50 a day, per person. An alternative is to  bring your own towel to a crowded public beach. French women don't believe in tan lines, therefore they sunbath topless. It always amazes me to see that a family- regardless of the age of their children, enjoy a day in the sun, while the mom and the teenage or adult daughters are both topless without raising an eye from everyone but the tourists.

beach

Beaches are beautiful, people are friendly, the water is warm and the sun is dangerous, packing on sunscreen was necessary.

Now we‘re off to Italy...

    • I have been reading about all your fabulous trips.  I am a single woman and would love to travel but I find that it is so much more expensive to travel when paying a double occupancy for a single person.  Has anyone ever thought about putting together a travel group here?  Maybe as we get to know each other, we can plan a trip at a group rate?

Great photos and travel guide Yana!  Makes me want to jump on a plane.  J‘adore la France!

I’ve made parmesan crisp salad bowls before.  I got a recipe off the internet for parmesan crisps, and then instead of letting them cool flat, I draped them over like-sized bowls.

    • Okay, I have to be honest and say that reading your travel blogs is not only making me incredibly hungry, but incredibly green!  And it has nothing to do with being ecofriendly...it has to do with the ugly shade of envy.

Keep the posts coming.  I’m living vicariously through you as I’m sweating my way through a hot Colorado summer.  My only consolation is that you may be gaining some weight from all the great cuisine!!!

      Hee hee.

    • Thanks for sharing Yana! I can see how much fun you are having. I can’t wait to take a trip there myself. As for the retaining their figure part, I wonder if it’s because their food, water, and air is not as loaded with pesticides, fertilizers, etc as we are her in the states. Makes you wonder. Anyway, enjoy and have loads of FUN!!!

It brought back lovely memories of the time when we visited Europe. I loved travelling through the French Riveria and especially remember atop Mt. Titlis in Switzerland.

It was so nice that you are thinking of all of us fabulous women here.

Have a Great Trip and Enjoy!
      Love,

    • Hi Yana!

You look like you‘re having a faaabulous time!  You took the whole family??! If that’s so, you‘re verrry brave! ;)

Italy is only a 9 hour ferry from us. I didn’t get to see it this time as having 3 small kids it just wasn’t practical, and getting someone to babysit for any length of time wasn’t possible.  Even though we are returning to Oz soon, I do still dream of doing the european tour with my kids one day too - and your pics hav given me inspiration!  Enjoy the FOOD and SHOPPING in italy - you can always diet and pay off that credit card tomorrow!!!

Enjoy Italy! I spent three weeks there for my 50th, and it was fantastic. Just watch out for the driving though. Every thing you’ve ever heard about Italian driving is true, but worse! But the scenery, food, architecture and people make up for it!

Enjoy the last bit of your holiday! I am Virginia bound in two weeks! Oh and I will publishing that great interview you gave me next week!

    • Hi Yana

I missed you in London and now I’m about to follow behind you to the South of France. We are off to Nice, Toulon and Monte Carlo next weekend and I can’t wait. I love the twice daily visits to the boulangerie and the freshest seafood on earth...I like the prices a little less though.

Enjoy Italy. If you get a chance do visit Lucca it is absolutely gorgeous and the best views are enjoyed by hiring a bicycle and cycling around the top of the city walls.

Now, I have to work on those few extra pounds I put on eating all of that French Bread. Yum...
