Dark circles under the eye may be caused by a number of factors including thinning skin in the eye orbital area, as well as heredity susceptibility and allergies. As well, the loss of skin tone and thinner skin that occur with aging can cause blood vessels under the eyes to appear more visible. Under eye dark circles tend to be more common in individuals with darker complexions due to the higher concentration of melanin in their skin. This increased concentration increases the tendency towards dark circles.

Researchers have discovered that Vitamin K (also known as phytonadione) can help to reduce the appearance of dark circles under the eye when applied topically. Though it’s not exactly clear why this works, scientists do have their theories. Vitamin K helps to control blood clotting and they’ve surmised that Vitamin K may work because dark circles are similar to skin bruises. The skin discoloration that occurs during bruising is the result of damaged blood vessels that leak blood which surfaces to the skin. Vitamin K may help to facilitate healing of this damage. A study published in the journal Dermatological Surgery found that Vitamin K combined with retinol helped to resolve the under eye discoloration that accompanies pulsed dye laser treatments.
