  • Hobbies & Interests

  • Favorite Activities

Volunteering as an adoption counselor at PAWS Chicago twice a month and walking my dog at least twice a day EVERY day, no matter what the weather. I love to travel and volunteered at an orphanage in China for two weeks last November. It was a truly humbling and inspiring experience.

  • Favorite Books

Everything by Jennifer Weiner, Alice Hoffman, Marianne Keyes, Laura Zigman and Patricia Cornwell, Single Wife, The Spiritualist, Anna Karenina.

  • Favorite Music

Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, Alanis Morrisette, the Bee Gees, Cold Play.

  • Interests

Vegetarianism, shelter pets, volunteering, travel, photography, exercise, reading.

I have been a vegetarian for 21 years - half my life. I had an adopted dog for 12.5 years, and she taught me more about unconditional love that I ever thought possible. I adopted another dog a month after her death, and it’s been a hard adjustment. Sammy would cower when scared; Charli tries to bite! We‘re now going to individual training sessions.

One of my best friends has a son, 10, with Spinal Muscular Atrophy - a severe form of Muscular Dystrophy. Rob has taught me so much about the beauty of life. He’s on a ventilator and feeding tube, but he is a true survivor and miracle.

I love art, traveling, crossword puzzles, reading books and the NY Times, exercise, Desperate Housewives, great wine and trying to make the world a better place.

Saving the lives of shelter animals is my greatest passion. I’ve volunteered at PAWS Chicago since 2001. I’ve fostered more than 75 dogs and cats since then, and have helped about 500 pets find new homes by volunteering as an adoption counselor twice a month. [Link Removed] shows this terrific cage-less facility. People who buy dogs from puppy stores are directly contributing to animal abuse; these animals come from puppy mills, where animals are crammed into cages their entire lives and often shot when no longer fertile. Please adopt and save a life!

I share a birthday with Earth Day and do my best to be environmentally friendly in every way possible: driving a hybrid car but walking to the health club, library, village town hall, etc. I use biodegradeable bags for my dog’s waste, drink water from stainless steel bottles, have CFLs and LED lights throughout my house and keep appliances unplugged when not in use.

I was married for 10 years. I didn’t want to get divorced and have struggled to date since then. All the guys in Chicago seem to want younger city women; I live in a suburb. The upside of divorce? Living alone for the first time and being able to shop without any complaints from my partner!

I work for a major bank. My office is downtown, but since July I’ve participated in the work from home effort, which saves the company leasing costs. It’s wonderful! And I still get downtown a few times a month.

I encourage everyone to follow your passions and make the most of every day.

    • Dear Chrisdih,
As you can tell by my name(luvmygoldnz), Goldens are my passion! My hubby (Joe)& I joined As Good As Gold Golden Retriever Rescue of N.Illinois(In Woodridge). You’ve heard of it? Anyway, My 2nd dog (the redhead)Cooper, we adopted from PAWS Rockford(I’m now a member). My first dog Addison (Blondie, next to Cooper),we adopted from a(Rescue)shelter in Indiana. Both are golden mixes Addison(mixed w/keeshond),& Cooper(mixed w/cocker spaniel). It matters not to me,one bit. They‘re everybit GOLDEN to me and loved VERY MUCH!!I have also joined the Humane Society.Between the Humane Society & AGaG ,both are aggressively launching campaigns against puppy mills. The Humane Society has been at this longer. AGaG is starting to put together their own fight against it. Yes, I have already joined that team as well. I would be interested in any info you could help me with . Thank You
