Starting Over At 54...
I’m a bit over 40...55 in May to be exact, but still feeling somewhat fabulous although a touch creaky first thing in the morning...
And, I am starting my career over. It’s exhilarating, scary, depressing and—-did I say—-exhilarating?
My Story:
Twenty-six years ago, my business partner (another woman) and I started a video production company with a $500 investment. We built it into a 10 million dollar company with offices in LA, NY, Chicago, Atlanta and Philadelphia. We very proudly gave employment to hundreds of people through the years, including several who made our company their home. However, we knew we didn’t wish to grow old working with clients who were beginning to be our children’s ages, so we spent the past ten years methodically preparing to sell the company...and we succeeded just about 18 months ago. Our deal included a two year commitment working with our new investors to find a CEO and transition our clients. We found that CEO (yet another woman) in January and now are finally able to step away. (That’s another story entirely—watching our baby be handed over to someone else) but that story is for another day...
So, it is time to start over. I am so proud of my business partner who has become an expert in wine, having just passed her exams for the top level sommelier title. As for me, I have launched a new jewelry design business: www.naked-jewelry.com. It feels very strange to be starting over, doing all the mundane tasks that I had long ago handed off to assistants at my video company—opening up a Fed Ex account, buying shipping bags and bubble wrap, organizing my accounting books...all new, all over again. But, I am an entrepreneur at heart, so having a business is almost like breathing...I must do it.
As part of my new business, I have also launched a blog: [Link Removed] It focuses on the “best-of-the-best” of jewelry designers, teachers and suppliers because I find accomplished people fascinating and I know from my video business that helping others helps me.
As I set about creating success for my online jewelry business, I am also learning SO MUCH about online social networking and blogs. It’s so vast that it almost feels like my head will explode! But it amazes and thrills me to see the connections that are possible through this incredible technology!
I look forward to getting to know some of you other “Fabulously 40“!
