I’m new to both this site and to knitting. I was introduced to knitting by my mother as a child but, until recently, I hadn’t knit in about 30 years. I’m finding a wonderful calm that comes with this new hobby of mine. I’m hoping that we can come together, as lovers of a common hobby, and share our projects.
I’m a knitter….well sort of. I can only knit scarves,
here is one that I’ve done
don’t you love how some women can even make a scarf look sexy? The only thing that makes me look sexy is the night light.
I grew up doing all sorts of needle work. I gave it up when my children were born and now I’m enjoying it again. I just started knitting and crocheting, I make blankets and afghans. Between typing and knitting I sometimes get a little carpel tunnel pain in my left. I think I need a new computer chair, I’d hate to give up knitting.
I love to knit, my first project was a basketweave pattern mohair sweater that took me 6 months to knit. By the time it was done I absolutely hated it! ITCHY AND TIGHT FITTING. I usually do blankets on a round knitting needle or simple sweaters also on a round needle. I started by making sweaters for all the dolls and teddy bears in the house. Unfortuantely with work and school, not to mention violin lessons I haven’t picked up my needles in a really long time. Maybe I’ll be inspired by this site. :)
I have noticed an entire world of free patterns available online now. How the world has changed. You can even shop for the best deal and largest skein of your favorite color and brand of yarn online.
relaxation = your favorite color yarn + your favorite knitting needles X your favorite pattern to work. Divided by time.
Yana, your scarf….beautiful. I used to knit alot. I gave it up when my oldest son was 4. He will soon be 28. My mother-n-law gave me some yarn and needles for my b-day. I’m getting more excited about starting a project. Thanks for the motivation ladies. ;)
Hello, I am new to this site but not new to knitting. I have been knitting for about 7 years now. I have made a little of every thing. Right now I am making socks.
Hi! As well as sew, scrapbook, paint, I also like to crochet and knit.
Here are a couple of cool sites (or places to visit if you live near by).
Brooklyn General (yarn, vintage fabrics)
Purl Soho (yarns, fabrics, other stuff) and,
Lion Brand Yarn (they also have stitches of the wk/mo, free patterns, etc.)
Hey Carla1019! You might have to blog instructions on knitting socks – I would love to learn!
Happy Knitting!
I’m a new knitter and still working on my first project (a scarf) for my sister. My goal to be done by Thanksgiving. I meet twice a month at Barnes & Nobles coffee shop with some friends of my mom group and we knit together.
Has anyone read the book the Friday Night Knitting Club? I just saw it recently and wondered if it was any good.
The book isn’t bad. It is very sad.. but has it good points.
I don’t want to tell you to much. I will say ,, and this is just my point of view.. it was not one of my favorite books. There are a couple of over knitting novel out there that I liked better.
I just learned to knit in January, but have become an addict. I’ve done a couple of baby sweaters, a sweater for myself, a sock (only one so far) and a couple of other small projects.
There is a fabulous on line knitting community at ravelry.com You can get tons of free patterns, advice and keep track of your projects.
I am glad to join this site too. New here, only one for a few days. I make my living knitting-sewing…so I better like it…right!
Anyway, nice to meet you all..
Here one of my designs…hope you all like it…you never know!
Best to all.
terri
Gosh I wish I could knit. I think it might be too tedious for me….then again maybe not. I need to get someone to show me. I might like it.
Terri…I love your design…..very unique. I like that!
Good luck with your business.
Wow I am impress. It is great that you get to make money on something you love to do and get to work with your daughter..
Maryclark.. if you really want to learn how to know you can go to Youtube or Knittinghelp.com
There are some great sites to learn to knit and some easy books as well. I am self taught from a book that I got from my great uncle after my great aunt passed away. No one else wanted them so I got them …yeah for me! I did not get to go to design school, however my daughter, Cassandra did get to go to FIT, in NYC.
That is one of my fav dresses, it has been in a few magazines and is one of our couture pieces. I am a very fast knitter, can even knit with my eyes closed, but even that took me well over 200 hours to finish!
I am working on a knitting book, and If you all would like I will post a few of my very, very easy..very “vogue” as they say, designs for you all. Then you can let me know if you can follow my design introductions. They would be for your personal use only. Please don’t make them up, and then sell them at some fair with your name and label in them…so not cool to do ya know. And I copyright all of my designs…so please remember that as well. It would be called stealing…oops…no one wants to be labeled that.
But really, would love your feed-back.
Thanks Carla….I use Youtube for the scrapbooking as well. When I get ready to learn..I will certainly take your advice.
Terri…sounds like a great idea…and of course…I will respect your wishes. I wouldn’t want anyone doing that to me either…so not cool.
You have no idea how many people in the industry really do that! So thanks….it will be fun to see what you all do with the patterns.
Terri, Are you menber of Raverly? That is one place you can really become a household name.
I would love to see more of you pieces.
ETA: I just went looking for you on Raverly and found one of your designs. A hat with many names.. but its a big pail of knit.. And maybe your daughter is on here??
Oh you mean a big pail of Sh-t….oh how I love the B….., yes I know of her..how sweet she is. And one of her followers has decided that she would try to break down one of our designs to make for her friend… really nice blog. I wish I could t-p her house like when we were teens….oh well.
I will have to look up Raverly and see what is there. I try to check to see what is out there, but can’t find it all.
Thanks for the heads-up.
We have a look-book on my-space with some of our work.

Terri,
I checked out your website and myspace. Fabulous, as fabulous could be! Much success to you!!! Your work is flawless and beautiful!
Sewdiva…you are just tooooo sweet!
I didn’t go back to work in the design field until I was in my 40’s. My daughter, Cassandra was going to FIT and when she had a bad job interview with a top designer…she was not hired because she was not tall and thin and she has purple hair…really! They called her in after getting her resume and loved her..but she was not pretty enough for them…it was bad. She is very pretty..anyway, she asked me to go to work for her at that time…so we are still just up and coming designers. It is a lot of work…more then most people think it is…not a glam job when you are working 10 hour days…or more and 7 days a week…but we try hard!
Oh, I can imagine that it is hard work. Our stories are similar, in that, I’m in my mid 40s and trying to get my work out there! I have the web shop, but I would really like to expand! I need my own website and domain name (which I am researching and trying some out). I have friends in New York and I am from Chicago – so, I have thoughts of visiting and somehow have a showing in these two key cities.
My husband has been supportive, but finances are, to say the least, funny. So, I need to find something part time, to be able to continue my quest.
It WILL happen!
Never give up on your dreams!!!! My husband has been our backer/banker too. And everyone is hurting…big time. Money is soo tight these days..and it cost $$$$$ to get out a collection and then go to production. And then to show, it is crazy $$$$$$$ for a few moments.
We need to talk off site..and I will really let you know what the fashion industry is like…you never really know who is out there on these site…I have some stories you would not believe…better to learn from others mistakes then to make them yourself. And we have make a few…never trust anyone who seems too good to be true…it will come back to bite you!
Hi all, I'm new to the group. and started knitting almost a year ago. I now live, sleep and eat knitting.. I'm not sure how I got on in life before it! I have been heavily into lace for the past 6 months. And I have recently begun spinning! Here is one of the favorite projects I did a few months back on the blocking frame (Swallowtail Shawl).
and my first Hand spun yarn! yipee!:
Laurenj I’m so impressed with all you’ve done in such a short time! I’m still at the hat and scarf stage for fear of totally screwing up. I’ve just started using circular needles and have an extreme fear of dpns. I just started a hat that will require dpns at the end of the project and I’m already sweating it!
I do not knit but will some day I have picked up loom knitting about a year ago and love it.
