I was recently asked by a reporter why people consider adopting special needs kids. (I have an online support resource for adoptive and foster moms, and mothers of special needs kids, called the Extraordinary Moms Network.)

I thought I’d post the question in a couple of groups here, and find out what YOU thougth.

Have you ever considered adopting (or have you adopted) a special needs child? How has that affected you?

      Thanks for your help!

        • Hi Heidi,

Have you ever considered adopting (or have you adopted) a special needs child?  I adopted a beautiful baby girl born who needed two major surgeries and had Down syndrome.  She is "Twin A" and was born at 3 lbs 7.5 oz and 7 weeks early.  When I adopted her, my eldest was 19 and my (then youngest) was 13.

How has that affected you?   She is the most wonderful baby girl ever.  She is always happy and brings a smile to my face at the end of my long workday.  There are more expenses with her than I experienced with my older children, because I made this decision as a single parent.  But she is worth it.

        • I’ve had a special needs child myself and if I were to consider adoption, I would certainly consider adopting a special needs child.

After my son passed away, I considered foster parenting and fostering special needs children.  Unfortunately I could not get my (then) husband to agree, and now I can’t get my current husband to agree to foster parenting.

        • Elizabeth: Thanks for taking time to write. I hear stories like yours from time to time, and it makes me happy to know that people like you exist in this world. People with generous hearts, who can find love and beauty in unexpected places.

I’d love to have you share your story on the EMN blog sometime, if you‘re ever interested in guest posting. Let me know: [Link Removed]
