Our after school care solution is pretty complicated. Where we live, elementary school ends at around 1:30pm, and there is no after school care at school.  We have a nanny who picks up my 8 and 11 year olds from school, gives them lunch (which is the main meal of the day here), and drives them to their after school activities.  She also picks up my 4.5 year old from her day care center when it closes at 4:30pm. It seems that life in Israel is geared toward mothers who either don’t work or work part time and come home pretty early, since there are no good after school solutions for elementary school kids, and most daycares for preschoolers close at 4:30pm.

How do you handle after school care?  At what age would you feel safe to let your child come home by themselves to an empty house?
