I am 44 years old and going through the early stages of perimenopause; experiencing frequent night sweats during my sleep.  In addition, I’m also experiencing very heavy menstrual cycles and frequent spotting. My GYN tells me that this is part of the changes.  Is anyone else experiencing this heavy flow? Sometimes I don’t feel comfortable leaving the house nervous about accidents.

My GYN did recommend birth control pills should the heavy periods continue. Does anyone else out there have another solution for me to consider?

        • I am experiencing the same thing. I was on the pill but then my moods and crabbiness were so much worse. I’m not going to yoga today for fear of an accident.

        • I had this problem too. I used to be on birth control pills until I was 40. My bloodpressure was going up and sure enough after I went off the pill it went back to normal. It was the estrogen causing it. Then the problem started with the heavy flow. I could not leave the house some days and had my share of accidents while I was out. My doctor and I discussed what to do. So we tried for several years different low dose hormone pills, some worked at first then they didn’t. I also had an ultrasound done and he found a fybroid. It may have contributed to the problem. I ended up having what mistic had done in March of this year. Mine was a balloon endometrial ablation. It seems to have helped. The flow is not as heavy but not light either. I still do have the fybroid which could be the reason. It may have to come out which on my next follow up visit will be discussed with my doctor. Birth control pills should help but as with any drug there can be side effects.

        • Mistic 1961 - yikes!  That ablation sounds horrible!  Why would that be an option?  Certainly, that’s not “natural“.  Why would your doc do that?  Do/did you have something else going on?  That just sounds SOO creepy.  YUCK.  Maybe I’m just a sissy?  Still yuck.  But, glad it worked out for you.  Just concerns me - what does that do to your body in the future, etc.?  Besides not having periods!
