I just read in my morning paper that our state taxes are going to rise. Our hotel taxes will rise one percent this year and another percent next year. My state makes the bulk of its income on a struggling tourist industry. Hotels are laying off hundreds of employees and cutting services, our county government has virtually shut down the B&B industry, restaurants are closing - it’s pretty dismal over here. And now our government leaders want to add insult to injury and make it even more cost prohibitive to visit here and to live here.

Our governer, who I know and really admire and respect, has vowed to veto these proposed bills but sadly, she’s outnumbered and her veto will be ineffective.

I also read that our income taxes will go up. This state is hard enough to afford as it is.

I am a small business owner and when I moved from Washington State to Hawaii, by business expenses tripled. Now I’m even wondering if it will be worth it to continue.

What are you hearing in your state or part of the world? How are your local government leaders dealing with the economy?
