My dearest friend and her husband asked me the other day if I would consider raising their son if anything happened to both of them. He’ll be 14 soon and I’ve been helping to care for him since he was 5. It was touching—they have numerous siblings and friends; he even has three living grandparents. But they were older when they had him and their siblings and friends are pretty much done with childraising.

So, I didn’t have to think about it. I knew the main consideration was “could I handle it if Dylan went anywhere ELSE?” No. And that’s what my friend said her first consideration was: Whom would he want to be with?

It’s a huge and daunting responsibility, especially for someone who’s never had children (although I’ve helped raise my nephew, and was very much involved in the lives of my other friends’ kids).
