I am seriously considering starting a local support group for military families. I am not aware of anything like this existing in my community or any neighboring communities. Do any of you have any support groups of this nature in your communities?
I’m not sure, there is a national guard unit in town and they‘re a pretty tight knit group of families who do things together. I don’t know about other military groups, though.
I have submitted a proposal to my church to begin a support group for military families in our church and also outreach into our community. The request is being presented to the elder board at the end of this month. I am trusting God that this will be approved. I am very excited about this and hoping this group will have a positive impact in our community. There are so many families around that have a loved one in the service. For anyone that does, you know the unique challenges and heartaches that we have to learn to live with on a daily basis. My son in law just graduated from Officer Candidate School with the Marine Corp. They are moving to Quantico, VA next week where they will live for the next 6 to 8 months. I will miss my daughter and 2 grandsons, but this is the reality of military life. Once his next school is finished, they will be stationed some where and move again. I am learning first hand of all the issues as I have a son in the Army and a son in law in the Marines. I have a real passion to take all the lessons I have learned and use them to help other military families.
If anyone has any suggestions on what to do or what NOT to do when starting up a support group, feedback is appreciated.
I continue writing my book about being a Mom of a soldier and have gotten a great response from my Writers Roundtable Group. I look forward to submitting the book for publication later this year.
I don’t know of any, but I sure would appreciate someone starting one. Go for it!
