I was thinking about this the other day because I often wonder how people come to hold the beliefs and views that they have. Do most people believe what they believe simply because it is familiar? Because that is what they have been told all their lives, they never question it?

I started questioning very early on and never took anyone’s word for anything, so I always wonder about people who don’t question. Are they afraid to question what they were told? Does it just not occur to them to question? Especially once a person becomes an adult, it seems there would be more examination of personal beliefs rather than just sticking with what the parents taught. How does a person determine if they have chosen to believe out of their own free will or if they are just complying with what they think is expected of them?

Which to me brings up a secondary question: What is indoctrination and how do you know if you are indoctrinated or not? How do you know that what you believe is really your belief or just something you have always accepted for whatever reason?

        • estatic another great topic! Yipee lol for me, yes part of what I believe is because of what I was taught as a child. Some of it is a core foundation. It made part of me who I am today. But as I came into my own some of it change. So, I found what I needed but still have some of the beliefs from growing up.
I do know that every religion has good and questionable and us as humans are the questionable at times. Meaning WE use our beliefs for good or bad. But the fundemental basic belief was good. I also believe that my faith is no more important than my nieghbors.I hope this was clear I am on meds that can make me hazy and I had a call in middle of this. If imnot please clear let me know so I can clear myself up lol thanks for understanding

        • This is an interesting question.
I first believed what I was taught as a child,
then as I got older started to ask questions and
only recently have had the answers that settled my mind.

Yes I do believe in the bible but don’t take it
as the literal word of Creator because for me
it is lots of writings, messages, poems, life stories, prayers
put together because all the writers believed in one Creator.

I have seen many things that convince me the earth was not
just formed from nothing and landed in a big bang,
and have stopped asking why am I here?
I now believe that everyone born on this earth has the sole purpose
in taking care of his or her little place on the earth.

        • I believe what I do today because one...I grew up in a Christian family.  I basically believe that the Christian faith is good..of course there are always bad apples in every faith/religion.  But for the most part...Christianity is good.  I have studied other religions and I still come to the same conclusion that what I believe is right for me.  Being the Christian that I am my goal is to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ, love people, and do the right thing or what God would have me to do.  Because sin was introduced into this world...I am a sinner and will always fall short of the grace of God.  But because I accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior I am forgiven and will spend eternity in heaven.  And how do I know this...because it is what I have chosen to believe and I have faith in this.  I would rather live my life as if there is a God and Jesus in my life than to not and die and find out I screwed up.  If I’m wrong which I don’t believe I am...then I have still lived a good life.  I’ve seen too many miracles and good in what I believe in for me to NOT believe it is true.  And I too believe that every person born has FREE WILL and is here for a purpose! No one is a mistake!
