Hello ladies - when I divorced almost four years ago I started trying new things as a means to improve my self-esteem and to get to know myself now that I was no longer someone’s wife. One of the things that I started doing was running.

One of my former co-workers who was a good 10 years older than me always talked about running. She regularly raced in 5k’s, 10k’s and even ran a few half marathons. I was impressed, so I asked her is she could help me get started. I started out slow but over the course of the 1st year and a half I was up to 8 miles, I ran few 5k’s and placed reasonably well, even took first in my age category in one race.

My intention was to run a half marathon. Well over the last year or so I pretty much let my running go - but am motivated to get started again. I am reading the A Complete Book of Women’s Running by Runner’s World to get the tools I need to develop an appropriate training program so I don’t burn out this time.

I just wanted to check in with the group to see if there are any other runners here. If so would love to hear from you how you stay motivated.

Also, do you run for fun or do you compete? How far do you run? What races have you participated in? Etc.

Looking foward to your feedback and possible starting a support dialogue to keep us focused and motivated.

      Lisa

        • Hi!  I am a runner and love doing races.  My prob is finding others to train with me.  I find running more than 3-4 miles boring alone.

        • I’ve never raced...but about ten years ago I started running to clear my head (I was going to school full time, and a stay-at-home mom to 3 pre-teens). I ran relays in middleschool track, but could never run a mile without having to stop.  Fifteen years later, I just decided to get up @ 5:30am to walk (summertime) and within 2-3 weeks was able to run 3 miles without ever stopping. Recently as a empty-nester I have fallen off the trail.  It’s hard to motivate myself to get out and do it.  I love to run alone...no worries about talking to someone...just run.  Now that I’m 44 my metabolism is starting to wain.  Any suggestions...other than “just do it“!?

        • I find that planning the night before works.  I have my running clothes layed out near the toothbrush and ponytail holder.  I go on auto-pilot and am out the door running down the road before I can think of an excuse not to run.
