I will be leading a 24 hour girls retreat (ages 13-18) at the end of January. I have been doing these retreats for 7 years, and I am just looking for some fresh ideas, or things you have experienced that I may be able to incorporate.

It is an overnight retreat where the focus is sexuality, respecting our bodies and mutual support - temples of the Holy Spirit. We usually bring in a massuese to pamper ourselves. We have had various themes: True Colors, Princess Totally, Flaky & Unique (snowflakes), True Love Waits, etc.

We have had guest speakers and a group of moms are usually a panel for “Ask Anything” questions. We have breakout sessions and something fun to do with our hands, and of course eating.

It is so important for girls to hear, from real people that have gone through real life experiences, the message for moral purity and create positive peer pressure as a support group.

         Thanks for any input!

        • Hi Tammiejo,

I served in youth ministry for 8 years, working mostly with high school girls. What you are doing sounds like a lot of fun!

I’ve been the director of a local pregnancy center for several years now, so I’m still working with young people. I’ve had it on my mind a lot that it’s the teens who have the power to turn the “sexual revolution” around. If somehow we could help them get a vision of the future, for themselves and their progeny, we might see the tide turn in the next 10 to 20 years.

This probably isn’t much help for your retreat, but your blog brought it back into the forefront of my mind.

          Blessings,

        • You are so right coachmombabe! I have seen this make a substantial impact in girl’s lives. Recently I heard (on some tv show, but I can’t remember what one)that some college women’s groups are finally making a stand that “hooking up” is so very dangerous to them physically, emotionally and spiritually. I was impressed that this “mini-revolution” is taking place. I only wish I remembered where I saw it so I could perhaps get some resources from them.

        • If you remember, or come across it again, please pass it on to me. I could use some of those resources in my line of work also!

Let us know what you come up with for your retreat!

        • Have you thought about having it a yoga center or yoga retreat center?  Yoga is very much about the mind/body connection and listening to yourself.

        • Yoga is great, also if you could incorporate any kind of expression dance. Tribal dancing is so mind freeing!
You could have a wig party.....all the girls bring wigs (updated) and try different ones on, take pictures and just have fun. Some may find that they might like a new hairstyle.
I could think of so many postive image techniques...this would be such great fun.

I have a friend who does Holy Yoga. I think I’ll give it a try after the 1st of the year. I hear really good things about it.

        • Also have been in teen ministry for years.  One year we had on minister “release” the gifts into some of the young women at one of our young ladies’ retreats, and it was amazing!  Because so many of the young ladies had questions about altar ministry, we had an impromptu rap session about the laying on of hands, being slain in the spirit and pretty much anything that they’d seen at the altar and had questions about.  well that led to “well, what gifts to i have?” and “how do i know if what’s happening is real?” until the minister in charge stepped up and began a practical demonstration and THEN the girls got to experience it for themselves.  That was almost 15 years ago, and most of those young ladies are in some form of ministry to this day.  So try the practical, hands-on approach instead of the lecture approach, ‘cause God sure gave the increase that day!

        • Trudy & lc: I think there may be a yoga instructor near by. I will check it out. And I love the wig idea too.

Psalmist - I think you are absolutley right about hands on. The more real and experiential, the easier it is for the heart to take hold of it and claim it as there own. We usually have very little “lecture” time.

          Thanks ladies!
