All the first ladies have taken ‘jaunts’ with their secret service men and stayed in posh hotels etc. regardless of our Countries financial difficulties.

She just gets more press as she is the first attractive, young[er] first lady and is news worthy.

Again this is not news, it’s gossip and gossip sells!

My problem is we do not know and will never know all the details of any admins first lady’s doings. Yet Michelle’s are under the microscope!!

But, again, gossip sells, not real news!

        • Well I don’t consider it gossip...it’s a fact.  And yes many other First Lady’s have traveled abroad....but I really do not think the others have spent the money that she is spending.  If it’s her money...then oh well...spend away...but..I know my tax dollars are going for he security at least.

You know...I find it every interesting that our president can tell us all to tighten our belts...or to sacrifice...etc...but they have certainly not walked that walk now have they?  If you have Americans that are losing their jobs every single day...not having money to buy things for their pure needs....you certainly do not go flaunting around the globe costing the tax payers money that could be used for things we really need.

My question is...if they have to go on a dang vacation...AGAIN...then why not travel YOUR OWN COUNTRY...AND STIMULATE THIS ECONOMY AND NOT SOMEONE ELSE‘S.

Makes absolutely no sense to me....typical Obamas...

        • Michelle Obama - The New Marie Antoinette? Maybe in the eyes of some. If we just have to compare Michelle to someone, why not Marie? Who's to say that Michelle and Antoinette didn't make sacrifice's. Michelle may have wanted to have 80 friends come along, but decided to sacrifice and cut it in half because of tough economical times.
Does Andrea Tantaros (author of this article) know for fact that Michelle is not paying for this vacation herself? Does she know for a fact that these 40 friends aren't paying for their own vacation cost? Does she know for a fact that tax payer dollars are being used for the secret service?
This is America, and if we choose to have a vacation, we are entitled to that.
Times are really tough for most of us, but I took my vacation this year. I guess I should have considered the fact that my neighbors were not able to take theirs.
Basically, I would only agree with this article if the $$ that everyone is so concerned about being spent, were fact based. They are only assumptions that some feel they have a right to make.
Most of the articles, blogs, comments are just petty, if folks would be a critic of their own decisions instead of worring so much about what others are doing, they may just find something postive and matter of fact to write about.
No offense to anyone, I could really care less about Michelle Obama, but she does have a right to her life, as we all do.

I do not think this trip was in their own best interest. Another nail. I do get if you can pay for a vacation and the expence that goes why not. But there is noway they can afford 40people at 2500.00 a night the pay of 70 secret service people plus room and bourd, the pilots salary, plus flight attendants pay, the fuel for AIR FORSE TWO ,the docking charge plus maintenance (yes a fee at every airport for private planes ) transportation, food, shopping, entertainment. .........ect.
It’s laughable that my tax dollars are paying for some of this and not new school books or food, shelter.
The times have changed when the U.S. was more solvent and middle America was eating and working we turned a blind eye to all the spending but now. ..really? You can’t state you know what middle america feels and then spend our money. There is sooooo many things wrong with this. If you don’t see what is wrong with this look at your own life’s what tax dollars could help your life? Better school, more books for school, ssi increase that isn’t even at the cost of living, options anything? No, then your one of the very very few in america.
Before you all jump down my throat all I’m saying is the times have changed and our first lady and president proclaimed themselves for the middle class you can’t make statements as that and walk a different tune. I’m blessed that I haven’t been hit like some of my friends or family.
If she wants a trip to Spain great do it in a few years when your not first lady then its your dime for sure and we won’t care, we’ll be going on about how much that first lady is spending.  Lol remember everyone gets their opinion. Lol

        • I agree with Annie and Crisastbury!

When you are part of leadership of whatever...you have to set the example!  Just last month...131,000 jobs were LOST!  The economy is NOT improving....people are losing jobs, their house, their cars, and a mere vacation within this own country is nothing but a dream!!!! I agree we all are entitled to a vacation and should do so if you are able to afford it.  If we all stop vacationing then our economic times would be even worse.  But let’s be reasonable here.  The amount of money that was spent by Ms. Obama is absolutely ridiculous.  If she and her daughter and maybe 2-3 friends had gone...it might not have been so newsworthy.  But 40?  Not a good example.
Furthermore...if you‘re going to take a vacation...why not spend your money (as they said it was their own money...yeah right)...in YOUR OWN COUNTRY who is suffering horrible economic times...to maybe employ some people HERE...instead of SPAIN?
You see, right this very moment...I could travel just about anywhere in the world right now and pay for it....but I rather see my own country FIRST...and spend my money HERE where it needs to be spent...not in a foreign country.

And now...the Obamas are going to take another vacation but to the gulf.  I guess since they have received such flack about their spending and travels in the last several months, they thought they best take a trip to the gulf...for picture sake.  That’s great...but you should have taken that trip FIRST.  Little too late now.....

But this is really not a debate.
Why can’t the First family take vacations or have celebrity studded parties of their choice? If I had all the stress’s that position comes and came with, I would certainly feel the need for vacations.
She, like all the rest of us should be able to make her own decisions about where she would like to take her friends and family.
Again, are there any facts that we the taxpayers are paying for any of this. Even if we are, it’s not any different than any other president.
I must be off to work now, will talk to you all later.

But being a strong woman is not the issue here.  But nevertheless, if I were the first lady I certainly couldn’t take a vacation as she did with a clear conscious knowing people are losing everything in my country while I jet off to wherever for fun! Again....I would taken ALL of my vacations in my OWN COUNTRY...to help support the AMERICANS that I serve or that my husband serves.
And we complain that jobs are being sent oversees or to other countries everyday...we buy things that are made in other countries instead of buying American made but we think it’s okay to support other countries for trips WE REALLY DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE...support their people..instead of our OWN?  I’m sorry...when you are in the position you are in...President, First Lady...etc. you need to show your support for your own country not someone else’s.

And by the way...the news did report this morning that the Obama’s did pay for this trip but the secret service was paid by the taxpayers totally $250,000.  That still does not bother me as much as the not spending those funds with Americans instead of Spain!

Additionally, financial difficulties have reached our shores  before  and as the greatest country have sailed through them in faith. We will rebound in exuberant fashion. For this reason, it is imperative that leaders in our country travel the world and show our determination, strength and tenacity to others who admire our resiliency and courage.

According to ABC NEWS and CBS NEWS.....the Obamas supposedly paid for the trip BUT...the American taxpayers paid for the security at the tune of $250,000.  Again.....we are in times that we really do not need to be jetting off around the globe for others to admire us.  It’s time our own people admired our own leaders for stepping up to the plate and walking the walk that they have asked Americans to do.  There is a time and place for everything and right now it’s NOT the time to be spending money (whoever it belongs to) in the fashion in which they have.  You‘re a leader.....you need to demonstrate to the American people YOU are sacrificing as well....if you call that sacrificing...I certainly do not. But as a leader you need refrain from such lavished trips while some Americans are wondering where their next meal is coming from or how they are going to pay that power bill.  People lose jobs all the time but 131,000 just in the month of July?  These are different times than in the past.....very different!

The President had a wonderful birthday and tell me again if I spent 1 of my husband’s birthday without him my marriage is going down the drain or for some strange reason their is trouble brewing?  I have never in all my life seen such disrespect.  The bottom line is that JEALOUSY has abound in the hearts of many.  President Obama cannot and will not be able to fix 8 years of mess in 4 years,it going take a whole other lifetime.  We put on weight over the years and it takes us years to get it off and that is ok, years to brake sex, drugs and all sorts of habits but it should take the President months to fix America’s mess.  Get over the JEALOUSY and find something worthy to deal with.  Tired of this BS.

        • Nicely said Annie....

And who said anything about Obama’s birthday?  I could care less if Michelle was there for his birthday. That’s their little red wagon.  That doesn’t concern me as long as he isn’t spending my tax dollars to throw himself a party.
I think he and his wife have spent enough money.

Also, if the First lady had stayed in the United States her visit would have stimulated the ecomony by spending money in our states.  Did it save thousands of jobs?  I doubt it but nevertheless...the money would have been spent HERE AND NOT SOME FOREGIN COUNTRY.  A sale is a sale!!! That visit to wherever could have given individuals more hours to work to service their visit....ultimately helping individuals pay that high electric bill or put groceries on the table, gas in their car, repair their car....and the list goes on and on.

Just like when the Masters Golf tournament goes on where I live. When the Masters is in town, our local economy is stimulated by people going to our restaurants, the shops, and people renting their houses out to patrons.  There are people who depend on that time of the year each year.  It helps families.  This would have been no different.

My suggestion is if you don’t like reading something...then don’t.  But I have every right to speak my mind when it comes to the leadership of MY COUNTRY and I certainly do not consider it BS.

Obviously, I haven’t communicated my point very well. Without being rude and down right blunt, I only want to make the point that we are all human, we make mistakes. We all know that mistakes have been made, past, present and future ones will be made also. Repulicans, Democrats, Independant, what ever party you are affliated with has and will make mistakes.

So why would Mrs. O do something so politically dumb as this, spending huge sums of money in another country when ours is going bankrupt?

It boggles my mind.  Don’t they want to get re-elected?  Stunts like this surely won’t help.

Lisa, you are right, this nation has become polarized.  His arrogance in refusing to hear us is why there’s such a deep division in this country.  This administration is ignoring us and our wishes.  From health reform to immigration, our government is turning a blind eye to the majority.  That is not the democratic way our founding fathers intended.

One term President?  That is my wish.  We need an administration that will create jobs.  This one is doing things that prevent job growth in its lack of support for business.  Until our people, as a whole, are able to earn a decent living to support themselves and their families, nothing else he does in an attempt to improve our nation will matter much.

        • I like your attitude, Lisa.  It doesn’t matter which party to me, either, as long as they are doing what it takes to get our nation back on track.

Like we’ve heard a million times before, “It’s the economy, stupid!”  If the economy was strong, I don’t think people would care where the first lady spent her vacation or how much it cost.  We’ve got to get our people working and feeling secure that prosperity will be strong and long-lasting.

        • Did Marie Antoinette invite the children in her kingdom to plant a garden? I thought she said “let them eat cake”   Just inquiring, maybe I don’t know the  historical data to draw a fair comparison.

        • @ Bfly and Bernadette, thank you for your post. Such a refreshing view. As an independent I do not partake in sides, I partake in what I find to be credible and will help the American people who place these individuals in office. I hear a lot about where are the jobs?...

Well, if the corporations who are heavily favored stop sending them to other countries there would be more jobs for AMERICANS  Hello!!! But I do not hear or see one person put up a sign that say’s bring the jobs back NOW!!!!! at the doorstep of their governor, state representatives, legislator or stop buying foreign products or making a huge fuss of international proportions. Mmm... I guess we will leave that one alone.

They would not dare go tell some of these wall street financiers, dow jones, banking establishments what to do. That to me is Hypocrisy when they received our taxes in the form of  bailout funds. I hear alot about the people, the American people and I work right in the vicinity of wall street and I have not seen one crowd demanding these jobs back. It has become all talk. So, who has send a petition to their state legislatures, to the national networks. Let’s show them we mean business when we put them in office. I will wait for the takers!!

The one who talks the loudest believe me will do nothing. They have no constructive conversation its just about picking sides. It takes two people to have a fight. We did not just land hear on this economic downturn, everyone must share responsibility for it. Republican and Democrat candidates have not taken their oath to help us as they should but special interest groups seems to be the creme due jours. Furthermore, if we put it in perspective,  it takes years to solve issues in one’s household, our relationships and careers etc let alone handling an entire nation problems. If any body here can do it God Bless them.

Its great to be able to share our thoughts here because truthfully we can learn from one another. Education is key!!

          -Marlene
