      •Lyman (Casey) asked if the group had interest in participating in a Undoing Institutional Racism workshop if Casey sponsored.  There was interest. (Since meeting a date has been scheduled. Please mark your calendars for Dec 10 – 12.)
      •The Kinship Gathering is Saturday, Oct. 18th, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the African American Academy. It is free and all are welcome.
      •Rep. Jim McDermott has passed a new bill, the Foster Connections Act. It contains new financial help for kinship caregivers and support for tribes. The group would like to know when the bill takes effect. An analysis of the bill was passed around at the meeting for review. Send thank yous to Rep McDermott.
      •Statewide Foster Parent and Caregiver Conference Update: People who attended felt like this year kinship caregivers were much better represented than in past years.

      Resource Presentation

      •Gerri Barsh, the new Region 4 DCFS Kinship Care Supervisor, presented on the resources available at her department; the Kinship Support Unit.
      oShe works with a team of 6 people – one at each of the different CA offices. So there is a point person on Kinship at each office. She gave us a list of these names.
      oObjectives of the Kinship Support Unit:
      •Complete Unlicensed Home studies
      •Health and Safety Visits
      •Dual Assignment/Partner
      •Team with ASW to identify permanent plan
      •Attend shared planning meetings
      •Complete case transfers
      •Support Kinship placements
      •Decrease length of stay of kids in care
      •Decrease timeframes of permanent plans
      •Provide support services to offices
      •Assist with completing non parental custody cases
      oWork Priority
      •Legally free children in their home of choice with permanent plan of adoption
      •Legally free children with permanent plans other than adoption
      •Relative/non relative placements with permanent plans
      •Dependent children with plans of adoption/parents rights not terminated
      •Attend all permanency planning staffings
      •The Kinship Worker will complete the case review transfer and identify barriers. Most barriers can be handled by Kinship Worker
      •Provide training on Non parental (third party custody)
      •Create Kinship Resource Guide

      Committee Reports

      •Steering Committee Update
      oHeidi Reimer, KCKC Administrative Assistant, left for a job with more hours. Before we hire someone new we need to ensure there is funding.
      oThe pilot site is up and running!  It is a warm atmosphere open Tuesdays with a meal, childcare, legal and financial help, etc. A tutoring program for kinship children will be starting soon at the Family Center.

      Support Groups
      Representatives from Federal Way and West Seattle were at the meeting. The group was asked for advice on starting up a new support group. Advice included:
      •Ask caregivers what they want; re days and topics
      •Use Full Group contacts as resources for presentations
      •Outreach at schools and headstart programs
      •Money sometimes available at Rotary or Kiwanis for food and childcare

      Next Full Group Meeting: November 17th from 12:30 to 3pm at Casey Family Programs
