In Betty Jean Kling’s own words and reprinted by permission....

The girls are hanging on for Dear Life – I am not given much hope for neither one but so long as they do not give up I won't either. I will work my fingers to the bone trying to get them through this. I have Louisa's extremities in motion – although the Dr.'s poo poo that saying if she can not move on demand – it doesn't count but I say if she could not move at all a month ago and she can move now – that is progress so I poo poo them.

I believe in miracles – she may only have half a brain but it was a fatal shot in the head and she was not supposed to live 2 hours and it is 29 days and she can breath and feel pain and now she can move what could not move before so – why not? I am in there every single day doing physical therapy and it is working – I am not counting that girl out yet!

Louisa is now on a Trach collar for 33 hours straight today for the first time and I have her moving all 4 extremities.

Marc (Louisa’s son) has asked that instead I honor her on my site but how can I do that - I am not a webmaster - she was my webmaster and now I have no way to honor her or her sister on my site or the women’s movement or anything - I am so sad about that! I would have loved to dedicate my site to the girls and the movement and to Louisa’s Law.

Denise is not getting better, on the other hand, she was not supposed to make it to the end of November. The Dr. said she would never see Christmas- maybe Denise misunderstood which Christmas huh? When I took over her care she weighed 80 Lbs. Now she weighs 100. We are up most of the night- I have to change her clothes every hour or so – she sweats so badly but I have her eating and drinking and walking around on her own now. Of course she is still depressed and even more so over her sister but we are getting through as best we can.

They also have the two grandparents and they are doing well for 84 and 88. I have them eating and drinking properly and their colds are under control and their sugar is under control too.

So all is as well as I can hope for right now – all I have to do is hold up and I am sure this 60 year old body can do that! I am strong as a bull and thrice as thick skinned and thick headed to boot!

Now aren't you glad you asked? heheheheheh

Update on Louisa 1/19/2009 from BJ

I am unbelievably happy today after nearly five weeks- I believe Louisa finally responded to a directive I gave her today. I have been working on teaching her to lift her hand to her face and to show me two fingers. Today she did both on command.
It still takes a great deal of time for her to follow that directive so the doctors still do not believe she is responding to me, however, damned them I am now so specific they can not convince me that these two fingers and reaching up toward touching her face are just coincidental movements - no – they can deter me from claiming some of the other movements but not these—no these are specific movements she is doing that I specifically taught her to do and she is doing them as directed. I am sure of it.
Whether they want to admit it to me or not – no sooner I started to show them the proof they are not admitting to as positive proof– they moved her to a lower care floor and after yesterdays' and today's activity with the two fingers- well we are off to Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation! sometime this week. Woo Hoo! Now that's what I'm talking about!

        • A Personal Call and a Prayer From Hillary Clinton
          Dear Ricki, (from BJ)
Thank you for your continued concern regarding Louisa and Denise. Life has not been the same since the last time I saw you in NYC at the Hillary event. That is one night I will never forget. A bit more than a month has passed since 12/15 and I finally got around to picking up my phone messages back home and much to my surprise I found – our beloved Hillary Clinton left the girls and I the most beautiful message and offered whatever help she could give. Oh how I wish I could have taken that call. On the other hand I would have been speechless. What a wonderful person Hillary is to have called and to have personalized the message as she did.
My Denise heard it and cried saying "Mom, the first lady called me by my first name and is praying for me? Wow".
I am trying to figure out how to save and preserve that message so that when we get Louisa well- she can say the same thing.
I have a feeling that you may have gotten word to her that I was there in NYC with her when it happened – I do hope she doesn't feel like she had to offer help because of that. She specifically urged me to not hesitate to call her if I thought she could help in any way. If she truly wants to help in some way – please tell me how to reach her as I would ask for direction on how to pass better laws to protect women from Domestic Violence. I am trying to craft Louisa's law right now.
Again, thank you for dropping Hillary a note on our behalf – we are very grateful for all those kind souls who are praying for us and we are especially pleased that Hillary took the time to reach out to us. God bless you for making my girls feel that special. You are a very special person for doing that and Hillary is a giant of a woman to reach out like that.
          So deeply appreciative,
          Bettyjean

        • I got from her Mum’s blog that she has now been moved to Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation which is not far from their home.

I’ve sent her a card with prayers and my thoughts to the hospital.
