I am a single working mother of three kids...and I feel as if I spend every morning haranguing them to take care of the basics so we can get out of the house on time.  Does anyone else struggle with this?  And do you have any suggestions as to how I can make the mornings go more smoothly for all of us????

        • When my kiddies were younger I made them get their clothes ready the night before. I also made them get in the habit of putting their bookbags near the door so they could grab on the way out. If they were taking lunch it was made the night before.

Basically I didn’t give them an option on doing it any other way. And once they got old enough to understand consequences I held them accountable and responsible.

It is fair to say that I did not coddle them in certain ways when they were younger. I always raised them with the intent they were only mine to tend for 18 years. After that they would be unleashed on the world and I wanted them to be prepared.

        • Ah, Vikki... that was exactly my intent as a mother. It seemed heartless to others but since I had to take care of myself at a very young age, I wanted my children to realize their own choices and power of self. ;oD

        • When my kids were young, getting out the door in the morning was always chaos.  We had no hot lunch program at their school so lunches had to be made every single morning, and they were each responsible for making their own lunch.  I can’t tell you how many mornings we were waiting for the dryer to finish drying someone’s jeans as we‘re on the way out the door and how many times I said they’d have to wear them damp.

They survived, I survived, and they all three knew how to do luandry and cook long before they reached jr high.
