I was watching The View earlier this year and saw Whoopi whip out her kindle.  I hadn’t heard of it before.  She went on to describe exactly what it was...and electronic book reader on which you can also get blogs, magazines and newspapers.  I HAD to have one.  At that point in time there was a month or more waiting list.  I’m not one for patience.  Yes I know it’s a virtue but it’s not one I have.  So I did the next best thing.  I went to Craigslist!  And voila!  There was one to be had by a young man in Queens.  I asked my husband to please please please take drive me out so I could get one.  He happily obliged knowing that if he hadn’t, I’d have kvetched until he relented.  So we went to Queens, picked it up (for a slightly higher price than Amazon was selling it for) and I was in piggy reading heaven.  I downloaded a couple of books and perused the Amazon site looking for other things for my kindle.  In the months since I got it, I’ve downloaded a couple of hundred books (most of them free) tried about 50 different blogs and read a few magazines.  We went on vacation for 3 weeks and I must have read 5 or 6 books in that time.  I didn’t have to schlep any books..just my handy dandy 10 oz kindle  What a pleasure!  If anyone is interested in purchasing one, Oprah has a promotional coupon.  If you go to her site and get the code word, you can purchase a kindle for $50 less than the current purchase price of $359!  I know it’s a lot of money in this day and age but if you‘re a voracious reader, as I am, you’ll make back the money in no time.  Almost all the books from Amazon are $9.99 and less.  Even brand new books that are only out in harcover for $25.  There’s a forum on the Amazon site where people share free book sites.  I’m hoping, if there’s enough interest here, we can start sharing info on free books.  I hope to hear from some of you about your experience with your kindle.  Oh and you can name it.  I named mine Precious.  I guess you can call me the kindle Gollum.

        • Thanks. Yeah...I’m gonna need free for a while...lol

I did go in and purchase a copy of the Bible for about $3.00. Had to make sure I had that with me. Eventually I want to put a lot of my hard copies on and donate my books. I am a bookie, my husband thinks I should start lending to the library. He swears I have more than they do.

I think that you can load up to 200 books on it. But if you buy some kind of chip you can load up to 4000. I may need two of those chips...lol

How long have you had yours?

Oh... and I went on eBay to see if I could find one, they are going for more than what it costs on Amazon. How crazy... I think if I was bidding on something there and the bid got close to the price in the store I would go to the store. I definitely would not bid $389 for it, then pay shipping. Yikes!

Oh well, now I am excited, I laid awake last night envisioning me sitting in truck stops, restaurants, or in church. I’m smitten...

        • I got a kindle last year from my mil. hmmmm she works at walmart and it was found in the store. after 30 days no one claimed so they auctioned it. she got it and gave to us. Well, i knew someone was missing this and really not sure how she did get it. hmmmmmm Anywho it did not have a charger so i bought one, charged it and played around looking for owner info. TADA, i found it. Called the number a few times and waited. The guy called a couple weeks later as he had been out of town. He was simply amazed that i was going to get it back to him. lol I’m a firm believer in karma!! I sent it back to him and he called me and thanked me again asking what i would like etc. I told him nothing. That i hope if something like this happened to me i would find someone honest. I felt pretty good about it and hopefully it showed my kids the ‘right’ thing to do.

One day, I will get one as they are totally cool!! Love the larger font options etc.

        • I GOT IT!!!!

          I AM SO EXCITED.

I haven’t put it down all day, well okay, they made me when I went to vote. But they lady at the voting poll was all over it too. SHe wants one now.

I already have several books loaded, and a few samples. I also went and looked at accessories - and ordered the messenger bag to keep it in when I go out.

          How wonderful.

          I honestly love it.

My husband just ask me how much it cost. YIKES! But I told him I deserve it. After all that I do and things I pay (bills) with my money. I deserve to buy someting I want. After all that’s what he does. Turn-about...

        • Mztracy,

I hope you get one soon.

And when you do you will love it all the more, because it will be yours and yours alone. And it won’t have that shadowing lurkiness about it.

          You did right.

I have wanted one for over a year now, so I started putting $5, 10, 20 back each pay day in a special savings account for it. When I had enough saved up, I had that fleeting guilty thought that I shouldn’t buy the kindle, but pay some goofy bill. Which is normally what I do once I get the money saved up for what it is I want. I talk myself out of what I want because we really need to pay such and such. Well not this time, and believe me it was worth the feeling I have inside. So from now on when I save money toward something I want, I’m getting it.

I wish we could start a buy mztracy a kindle fundraiser. I would definitely donate just for you. You deserve it!

          Hugs to you.

        • OMG! I'm like mztracy... I want one SO BAD!  I told my hubby about it and he thinks I'm crazy to want to spend that kind of money -- especially when I've been getting most of my books at the "Used Book Sales" ($0.25 to $2.00 at most) or by swapping and borrowing from friends.

I am going to keep it on my WISH LIST and hope that one day, I’ll be blessed to get one!

        • Gurl..It won’t be anytime soon..there’s no way we’ll be able to kick out that kind of money..hubby asked what I wanted for my b‘day and I told him either a Kindle or a new mp3 player..The one I have is only 8 gigs and I want a 16 gig...but realistically I know I won’t be getting either of them this year...It’s cool though!
