I got a phone call from my father yesterday while the hubby and I were waiting to go to his surgery appt. As I sit and talk to my father, he says he has some bad news. There’s a possibility he might have prostate cancer. They got his blood test back and it showed high levels of PSA. I was in shock. This is my father, my Dad, my Daddy!!! It can’t be happening to him. They‘re going to do more test on him tomorrow, but I have been in a very strange place today. Not really sure how to feel about all this. It cant’ be happening!!! It’s not true. I know I should wait until the test come back, but I just don’t know how to feel about all this... How do I handle it?? How will my mom be without my father??? How will my kids react to the news if he does have it??? I’ve been trying so hard to keep my mind occupied on other things but it’s been so hard... I need your help my friends.. I need your strength, love and prayers!!!! Please....heart

“Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Test — A sample of blood is analyzed for PSA, a substance produced in the prostate gland that helps liquefy semen. A small amount of PSA always circulates in the blood. High PSA levels, or levels that rise over time, could indicate prostate inflammation, enlargement, or cancer.”

        • Virginia I know it shakes you to your very core when a loved one is diagnosed with cancer. Medical advances have done wonders with many types of cancer and prostate is one of them. I know it doesn’t make it any easier as you wait for more testing to be done. I’ll keep your dad and your family in my prayers. I bring my list with me to mass on Sundays and I’ll add you for tomorrow morning.

        • I know this is a tough time to be going thru.  The anxiety and the what if’s are terrible.  Do keep in mind that nowdays, prostate cancer is so treatable.  Every man I know who has been diagnosed has gone on to lead a long healthy life yet.  My prayers are with you and your family.

        • Yes, the ladies telling you that prostate cancer is treatable with great success are right. I’m sorry you had such a scare with the news, but I understand that it’s your father telling you and the big ugly word, Cancer was spoken in connection to him. I hope for the best and I have you all in my prayers.

          Hugs,
          Cathie

        • Virginia, I am so sorry to hear this about your Dad. I know first hand about prostate cancer as my husband was diagnosed with it 4 years ago. The next step for your Dad will most likely be a biopsy where they take several tissue samples and number them. If there is any cancer in any of the tissue that will give them a good idea where the cancer is located. Then they will come up with the Gleason score telling how aggressive or not it is and what stage it is at. There are so many options available to treat the cancer. Keep in mind though just because his PSA is high does not mean he has cancer. My Dad has a very high PSA and there has never been any sign of cancer just the way he is. I would be more than happy to talk to you, just say the word and we can chat. I know exactly how you feel and talking to someone who has been through it can help.heart
