This is my very first shot at poetry. I hope you like it.

       On Writing a First Poem

      The mind slips sideways
      A silent shift
      Like a deep ocean current
      An unseen drift

      Fragmented colors,
      Green and gold glint
      A sparkling mosaic
      An igniting flint

      To what purpose
      This twirling dance?
      Down darker, murkier halls
      Though not by chance

      Splinters of favorite poets
      Gleam through the muck
I’m sure Prufrock would be proud
      That his observations stuck

      Thought is so difficult
      What happened to the Light?
      The soul cries for mercy
      From this unending night

      Rage, he counseled, Rage
Against the dying of the light
      I cannot access my rage
I fear I’m losing this fight

      Vegas has no odds
      High enough to wage
On the outcome of this war
      With the staring, blank page
