      Puddles

      i forgot to tell you
the cat got in again today
      knocked over the fish bowl
      and ate the fish
there's still a puddle of water
      on the kitchen floor

      the tree you planted
      in the spring made it
      through the hot torturous summer
      but now that it's fall
it has dropped all of its leaves
and stands as bare as my soul

      your sister's having thanksgiving
      i offered to bring
      my seven-layer jello-mold
      but i won't be decorating
      the edges with limes
      cause that was your job
      and nobody ate them anyway
      except for you

      the knife you sharpened
      is dull again
and the light in the cellar
      is flickering
      and you know how much
i hate to go down there
      plus, i can't remember
      what you did
      to unplug the sink upstairs
      it's moving slowly
so i guess it'll work itself free
      eventually

      the neighbors mentioned
      the christmas lights
      asked if i wanted help
      putting them up
      told them no
so i gave them the whole box
      extension cords and all
      hope that's okay

      oh, by the way
      i forgot to tell you
      the roof is leaking
so could you ask the boss
to hold off on the rain
      for a few days
between the roof and the cat
      and me missing you
i have a lot of puddles to wipe up

      Nancy
