For some odd reason, people think of camping vacations only in the summer months. Maybe it has to do with school being out, or family holiday barbecues, or perhaps the warmer weather and abundant sunshine.

In California we are lucky to be able to camp all year long. In the winter months we head out to the amazing Mojave desert, spring is best for Gold County or Sierra Nevada foothills, summertime is High Sierra & NorCal coast, autumn is great in the Eastern Sierra.

This poor economy has caused my web site traffic on “Total Escape” to soar. Yes indeed. After 12 years online, visitors are seeking local outdoor-oriented vacations on a budget. Close to home, inexpensive getaways. Literally dirt cheap.

For the last 2 decades I have specialized in the back roads of California, showing you where to avoid the crowds and find the secluded lakes and streams, plus avoiding the steep camp fees. For a $20 map and a tank of gas, you can have a whole, glorious weekend in the mountains camping and hiking and exploring nature.

If you are in dire need of a drastic change in life, then I urge you to get back to nature. Go biking, kayaking or camping this weekend!
