I saw this article about the Hermit card at Suite 101 by Joanne E. Brannan:

and it inspired me to make this the first card I created a topic about.

The Hermit seems like a good choice for this time of year since I always feel rather introspective in autumn. I like what the author says about “. . . genuine progress in spiritual understanding and perspective on the world, as opposed to blindly following any one tradition.” That’s very much how I feel about spirituality. I want to truly understand the nature of things. I don’t follow any tradition or religion without question. I’m usually full of questions. I think there can’t be true insight without questioning.

The Hermit’s lantern brings to mind the saying “the brighter the light, the darker the shadow.” Whenever we look within, we have to be honest with ourselves and if we want to shine brightly, we must confront the darkness inside. You can always tell the people who think they are shining brightly but haven’t really confronted the shadows within. They are the “Pollyanna” types who want to pretend they don’t have a “dark” side so they ignore it. You can’t control it if you ignore it. The undesirable aspects of our psyches must be confronted head on. Enlightenment comes with responsibility. If you want to shine brightly, you must be able to face harsher shadows.
