I posted this on Facebook too. I’ve been watching a mother hen in my jacaranda tree this afternoon. This little baby is only moments old. It’s the first one down from the nest. Talk about innocence and trust! It has no idea that I’m anything big and scary. My heart melted for this little creature. I just hope its mom hurries up and hatches its siblings soon and comes out of the tree to tend to her young.

        • I keep looking outside but I don’t want to go out there. I don’t want the mother to freak out and not come down out of the tree with me there. The baby is still keeping itself safe at the base of the tree and waiting for its mother to finish hatching.

        • aw cute. Not sure if they are like bird birds, lol but if human scent gets on a baby bird, the mom may not come back. Don’t think it’s the same for chickens though!

        • In the past I’ve put seed out and the momma hens have brought whole broods of babies right up to me so I don’t think she’ll have a problem with me. She’s still up in the tree, though. She is still sitting on eggs  and never came down this afternoon. If the little baby didn’t hunker down at the base of the tree and stay warm it will likely die. Nature is cruel sometimes. I feel sad for the little guy. But, I’ve had very small babies show up at my back patio and they’ve managed to survive even though they can’t fly into the trees at night. I’ll take a look in the morning.

        • how high up is the mom?
Are you able to put on a glove and return him?
If not add a couple of old blankies at the tree base and maybe he will curl up in them

        • I’ve used a towel and a box to keep baby birds in until Mama bird got her act together. Not a towel washed in detergent and fabric softener, just a dish towel. This was with wild baby birds, who were about to be snacks for the neighborhood cats. This little chick is so cute, it made me say awwww!
