The Summer Challenge 2010 will be a time of transformation for both my mind and my body. At the most basic level, I want to lose the excess weight not only because I want to look and feel my very best, but also as a means of self discovery. I put on the pounds, for the most part, because I felt that I had to do things for everyone else first.By doing this, I placed myself last every time. Having to make meals or taking on extra responsibilities have cut into my personal time when I would work out and do something special for myself every day. In losing the pounds, I want to discover the person that I have been hiding behind the extra layers.

I have totally changed the way I am going to lose weight. I recently came to the conclusion that I could lose weight the hard way or the fun way. I am replacing my dreaded workouts with activities I love to do, such as my eliptical session that I listen to something new every day. Depending on my mood, I could listen to newly downloaded music, or an inspirational podcast. I also am varying my strength training to include various free weight exercises, expanding my yoga practice and starting pilates again. In addition to Annie’s challenges, I feel that I am more accountable, but in a fun way. I no longer beat myself up if I didn’t work out or I ate a cookie. The results are starting to show as I have already lost five pounds! I am actually looking forward to losing weight!

I want to thank everyone on the team for their support and keeping me accountable in a supportive way. I had no idea this is exactly what I have needed to lose weight.

I look forward to our success along the way.

      Mary

        • I love the quote at the end by Thomas Edison! How perfect that was.

Mary, this is a remarkable thing that’s been started. I believe in my heart of hearts that all of us will be motivated by one another, encouraged by one another, lifted up when we‘re down, congratulated as we reach our succession of goals - this is the start of something wonderful. I, too am very thankful that Annie and Vikki put the wheels in motion here for this endeavor.

I was telling Joe this morning that for the first time in years I wake up in the morning looking forward to my exercise and at the end of the day I am excited about starting all over the next morning. I can see the results ahead of me; each day the vision is more clear and a little closer than the day before.

        • Mary, thanks for those encouraging words.
I too love that Thomas Edison line.  It just hit me right between the eyes.   Got me thinking, I AM capable of cooking differently than I have been, so why not do it?

        • I am sorry that I have been MIA. My Mom was in the hospital and my whole life has done a 360!. Warning, this might be a long post!

What I have learned is to tune into my body and eat only when I was starting to become hungry. What is amazing about this is that I am starting to crave a lot of veggies. A typical plate now is filled half with veggies and a quarter of lean protein and a healthy carb such as quinoa or brown  rice or barley. I have learned to make an amazingly quick barley recipe that can take the place of risotto. I will post a recipe soon.

As far as my workouts, I have not been as aggressive the last 10 days as my schedule was hectic, but I was able to squeeze workout minutes to lose 7 pounds so far. I purchased a DVD by Mandy Ingber who states during the workout that she “never got into shape faster by beating herself up“. I have adopted this philosophy and what is so amazing about this new attitude is that I am so much more relaxed and I am losing weight. I have switched my attitude from fighting weight loss by beating myself up to one of more making it more fun.

One more thing that I do. Starting this month, I am going to set up daily, weekly and monthly challenges based upon my diet, exercise and stress management needs. My most favorite challenge this month is that every week I have to let go of something that weighs me down and add two things that lift my spirits. This week, I cleaned out a closet that was seriously bugging me. I started a habit of sprinkling a few drops of essential oils to my shower (makes me feel like I am at a spa every day!) and I am now taking out a few minutes  in my life just for me. It has made all of the difference!

Now that my life will be starting to calm down soon, (I hope!), I will be posting more.

Thank you ladies for inspiring me! I wish each and every one of you success this month!

        • Vikki,

You can steal all you want since I have stolen so much from you! I have gotten so many new ideas from this challenge, I love it!

My Mom is doing better, out of the hospital finally! Now just the rehab portion and getting back into her life. Having had to deal with my parent’s health issues this year and last year has given my a new appreciation for  health and how much I take it for granted.
