It’s been a week since my sis had a heart attack. Since then I’ve become a board member of my local chapter of the American Heart Association, talked with a few cardiologists and started reading a book about women’s heart health.

It’s scary that my sis could go from having chest pains over a 2 month period of time, go in to the doctor on 3 occasions and have several different tests, everything coming back normal. Doctors passing it off as stress and then having a heart attack that turns out did some damage to her heart in the long run.

The reason was, a piece of plaque broke loose, travelled up the main artery to the heart and caused a 90 plus percent blockage from the aorta to the heart itself. If she had been only about 15 minutes later in getting to the hospital the outcome may have been very very different.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women today. So, I’m on a mission to gather as much information as I can and share it with everyone I know.

        • I also want to mention that her biggest fear has always been cancer. She’s the spitting image of my dad’s side of the family. They all died of cancer - many of them in their 40’s. She’s had every cancer screening test under the sun. No one every had an inkling that it was the heart disease of my mom’s side of the family that she should be worried about.

I am always afraid for myself...that is the reason I am trying to lose the weight, quit smoking AGAIN, lower my cholesterol and high blood pressure....Heart disease does run in my family.

        • oh Cyn,  so sorry.  this is such a scary time for her and you!  As a person who has 2 parents w/ heart conditions-it’s imperative that she go to rehab, exercise and do all the “boring” things.  my mom does-she looks fantastic, active and is sharp as a tack at 80.  my dad-won’t do any of what he’s been told, had a bypass and valve put in and has memory issues b/c he isn’t getting enough oxygen!

me, I’m more prone to heart disease b/c of them and my RA-one of the many reasons I border on “anal” w/ my exercise and diet.

        • I just heard from my mom that the original diagnosis on my sister’s heart attack was incorrect. Her arteries are fine, there is no issue with placque - she had a heart attack due to stress!

So now I’m thinking, controlling stress is every bit as important as eating right and exercising. Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers. I do appreciate it and I know that my sister does, too.heart

        • Good to hear your sister is doing ok and hope she finds a way to reduce her stress, that’s a very hard thing to do for many people.  I was certainly one of them, and was also concerned about how my stress level might impact me someday.  I wish your sister well and hope she works hard at living a stress-free life style as much as possible.

Help her to laugh more often, that definitely helps! happyheart

        • Hey Cynthia,

Has your sis recovered well?  How is she doing?  Hope she’s found a way to reduce the stress.  Do they still think she has permanent damage to the heart?

Cardiac disease is heavy on my mind these days as I follow my own parents’ health issues.  I go to all their cardiology appts with them and try to learn as much as I can for them and myself.  The last two years have really opened my eyes.  So I’m interested in any info or news about your sister’s experience that you’d like to share.

Hope your sister is doing well now.  Take care, my fab friend.

        • Cynthia, so sorry to hear about your sister. I can certainly understand how stress can take it's toll on the body. My mom (had a triple bypass) and I myself know what it's like to live with stress and the kinds of affects it can have on our overall  health. We're blessed to have found a way to keep that under control. She and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
