I’m curious to know what others do with their pets when they travel. I’ve left my cat in a kennel but he really hates it. I’ve had people come in and care for him but he gets very lonely when he has no people contact for long periods of time. Right now my stepdaughter, who lives on the property, takes care of him. We pay her even though she lives here. She works nights and doesn’t come home many evenings. She says that when we‘re away she comes home every night and takes care of our kitty but I think she’s not telling us the truth. Our cat seems very very needy when we return, even after just a few days.

What do you do when you travel? Who takes care of your pets?

        • my neighbor goes out of town quite often, sometimes for a week. I go over everyday to take her mail in and feed the kitty. I know that she get’s lonely, so I try to spend a little time playing with her each day and be sure to give her a treat before I leave.

        • We don’t leave for a long period of time, It’s usually for 2 to 3 days, so my Best Friend or my mom watches our pets and feeds them and they stay awhile to play with them. I know when my cat Bugsy was here he was basically Independent and only needed feeding and water and he was a happy cathappyheart they get well taken care ofheart

        • We ask someone to house and pet sit for us while we‘re away. We’ve also had a pet-sitter come over twice a day—she was good, she would walk them to the park and play a while and afterward stay at the house and watch tv with the dogs for a bit before leaving. happy

        • Our dog goes to a local kennel when we travel.  She has scheduled walks and play time every day.  The staff are wonderful, always the same people working there, they really care for all the pets.  They give her a bath & groom so she’s all fluffy when we come collect her!

        • I think the best for pet and owner is when a friend can house/pet sit...  however, that is not always an option for all.  My labs require way too much attention and activity for me to have someone just come over once a day. So,  I take my labs to a daycare/boarding facility- which is fabulous.... they get to roam free inside and out (fenced of course) and are only kennelled at night when it’s time to sleep.  All dogs have to pass an ‘interview’ to determine that they are friendly enough to hang out, so all the dogs are nice.  The place also has a webcam, so you can check em out while your away.  I was never a kennel fan, but with more places like this around, I feel better knowing they are getting a vacation as well as me. :) (Downside is, it can be a bit pricey, so you have to budget that into your vacation $$) but it’s worth it.  :)

        • When I worked and traveled my daughters or sisters or mom always came and visited with my lovelies.
And now when I go somewhere someone is usually still at home with them.

        • My dogs go over to my daughter’s house who also has one puppy from the same litter, or when I cruise my 16 year old doesn’t go, so she stays home and takes care of the pets...although I’m sure they don’t get optimal treatment...lol

        • Kim, your boarding facility sounds ideal!

I have a pet sitter whose name I got from my vet. She LOVES all animals, and last time I was away my cat Lexie got sick - and my pet sitter got a prescription from my vet, used her own money to fill the prescription, and somehow snuck the medicine into Lexie’s food.

She also leaves a little diary of each day, so when I come home I can read about my pets’ details.

Still, that’s the one thing I don’t like about traveling. Even with the best of care, Lexie and my bird Kirby are unnerved by me not being there.

          Great question.

          Namaste,
          Suzann

        • Suzann, I wish I could get your pet sitter over here! What a dream to have someone take the time and effort to leave a diary! Murphy would be in heaven with someone like that.

        • Cynthia, she is really an total animal lover. It was funny because after I came back from my trip she called me every day for a few days to make sure I was keeping up with Lexie’s medicine!

        • Cynthia, you know Stoli is royalty, if there is no friend who can take care of him, someone stays home.

          He is spoiled rotten.

        • I really need to find someone who will care for Mr. Murphy when we‘re away. We travel a lot. My husband’s daughter is no longer an option. She’s had 2 “last chances” now and has screwed up bit time. So, it’s back to square one for me.

          Stoli! Love that little guy!estatic

        • When we had our dog Brandyheart, she would go to a kennel nearby..it was a small place and provided the animals with very good care..our kitties would stay home and our neighbor would come over every day to change their water and feed them. One time, though, when our one kit Whiskers was by himself (our other kit had passed)heartbreak, we no sooner got in the door and he was right there screaming at me as if to say, “Why did you leave me alone.”  I felt horrible, so we put off vacations until our sweet Whiskers passed on.heartbreak
