you need to try one of the body lotions with fake tan added so you only adding a hint at a time and also nourishing your skin
In the UK we have Dove and Johnson’s - if you can’t get these then the St.Tropez is brilliant they do a fair and this again you just gently build up - have you thought of just adding some fair fake tan to body lotion this way to dilute it down
Bare Escentuals has one called Faux Tan. I love it!!!! You can go straight on and have that summer tan. Or what I do is mix it with my body lotion for a little color. It works and I am super pale.

My daughter is getting married in May and it’s really going to be hot down here in Houston.
I just can’t bring myself to wear panty hose so I wanted to start trying them out before.
That brings me to another question for me to ask 
I use the lightest color Coppertone that I can find. Like Vikki, I mix it with hand lotion which also helps you get more even coverage. It’s the only one I’ve found that looks okay on my pale skin.

I use Loreal (I believe it is??). It really works well! I buy it at Target or Walmart and it’s only about $6.
