Q & A

Help! I need some advice! My unemployment insurance has just run out so money is very tight.  Also just found out my daughter needs her wisdom teeth out so another unexpected expense. A good friend from college’s daughter just graduated from UCSD so my friend and her husband and other daughter are coming down tomorrow and want to get together.  Chances are they will offer to pay for dinner, but I cannot be sure.  If we don’t get together she will be very hurt. We bought the daughter a card, but I will feel cheap if I don’t give her at least $20.   In addition my daughter must complete and turn in her photography class assignments by Friday the 17th so she is super super (5 hours a day of homework- at least busy) and she’s getting her wisdom teeth out the 15th.  We also want to get together with other friends who will be in San Diego only a week. These other friends I know I can explain my situation and they will offer to pay. Still I feel so cheap and poor.  We don’t get visitors that often and now everything is happening at once. Should I just put everything on my credit card and worry about it later? Thanks for your input

    • If they will offer to pay, let them. Maybe you can get it next time, when things are going better for you. Try not to use your credit card, it will be another source of stress when you owe that too.

I hope it gets better soon for you all, Dianne407

    • Anne, I think Melissa has a fantastic solution, especially about the dinner with friends at home, which is more intimate and fun too. A nice card for the graduate is sufficient. Write something from your heart and it will be treasured.

I nix use of your credit card for entertainment as well. A credit line is a blessing when it’s needed for the emergency situations in life, but being in debt can take you down too.

I add you to my prayer list for a new opportunity to pop up and change your situation. It’s from me so maybe you can count on it being ... unusual? LOL

      Hugs,
      Cathie

I believe Melissa is onto something good! Another thought is you could explain to your friends that you are limited on time and would like to invite them over for hor dourves and a drink before they go out to dinner.

And YES stay away from the credit card!

    • Credit cards are just for emergencies when you‘re unemployed and this is not an emergency. Lots of good ideas here, I just wanted to reiterate on the cards.

    • Great ideas ladies~ Melissa—good thinkin‘!

It’s most important that you do get together, the friendship is worth most. Chances are that your friends understand already if they know you’ve been out of work!!

    • Thanks for your great ideas!  I ended up meeting one family at the mall and we talked for a couple of hours.  The other family rented a condo in San Diego and invited us to dinner-I’m bringing desert!  I gave the graduate a card with a ten dollar bill. All’s well that ends well.
