Q & A

Anyone know someone who has had an aortic valve replaced? My mother was told yesterday that she has to have this particular surgery. She’s 83.

    • I know this surgery is pretty routine these days but the only other person I know who has had it is in his 60’s. My mother is in good health overall and feels fine. She just gets a little short of breath from time to time. That prompted the doctor to order some tests. The cardiologist she saw yesterday told her that she should have it done while she feels good; her heart valve is wearing out and is leaking. Over time her heart will weaken. As a family, we‘re pretty nervous about this.heart

    • I’d be nervous too!

My ex husband had a heart valve replaced.  I don’t know all the particulars, but from what the kids said, he darn near died and he was a big healthy 39 year old man at the time.  I think he got an infection, but don’t remember for sure, but he was in the hospital for a long time.

I always have to question the wisdom when doctors recommend major surgeries for the very old.  Even a very healthy 83 yr old is has much less healing ability than someone much younger.
