Q & A

Have you bought children’s lately?  Does anyone think that the toys on the shelves are mindless pointless junk?

    • Oh shoot, that was supposed to say children’s toys.

I took my 7 yr old grandson (daughter’s stepson) to Kmart with me yesterday.  I let him go up and down the toy aisles and look at stuff.  Nothing there that fosters imagination, develops fine motor skills or anything.  Just a lot of plastic junk that will break in 2 days.  Good grief, even a plain old nerf football costs well over $10 nowadays!!!!

I’ve got this kid for the weekend and I have discovered he has no clue how to just play, nor can he read, nor can he build anything.....   :(

    • I don’t have a little one or grandchildren so I haven’t bought any new toys lately. However, I’ve seen some and I do agree with you.

So many kids are experts on the computer games and some games are so violent. So sad if they can’t read...

    • Does he go to school?  Very odd that he can’t read, or as Linda mentioned, does he spend too much time playing video games?  Very sad that many young kids are not taught the basics of having fun without being subjected to technology at such young ages today.heartbreak

    • yes I have a room in my house for kids to play in all kinds of toys, games, books also for reading, when I am out I will pick up something to add to the room for them because I use to do daycare and with having 11 grandkids it would help alot when all the kids and cuz, and friends kids come over it would give them a break I do have the games also for tv but the older kids play that  it,s a dance game, and a jumping game so they get a workout  and the younger ones make things for there mom,dad

    • Yes Mary, he goes to school.  He’s doing first grade a second time around.  I wrongly assumed that since he’d been thru 1st grade once that he had the basics of reading down, but apparently not.

I do know that from now on, the computer will be strictly off limits at this grandma’s house.  He can cook with me and garden with me, and build with blocks, and run in the street, but there will be no electronic devices!!!!

    • Tulip, in our school district kids who NEED to repeat a grade don’t, so these students keep getting more behind in their reading and writing level. Due to the No Child Left Behind our district passes all elementary students to the next grade and that really does them injustice because they are not that grade level and continue to fall behind. These students are pulled from their classroom to get remedial learning from a special education teacher and/or put in a small reading group, but that doesn’t always help.

As I’ve mentioned above, these kids are experts on the computer games, but have difficulties in reading. Repeating a grade would be more beneficial.
