Q & A

What does it mean to “commit to the relationship and not the person” while dating?  I don’t get that per se.  Also, I take it the tips are strictly for dating before a relationship develops and not necessarily after there is a decision made that there is an exclusive relationship of boyfriend and girlfriend pending a potential engagement and then marriage, right.  Because if I’m going to be exclusive with a guy I have to be able to trust him.

I agree with everyone here. Dating carries no commitment but when it turns into a relationship the commitment is mutual on the part of both parties. But, once there is a commitment to the relationship, there is also a commitment to the person. to me, they both go hand in hand.

    • Sounds kinda weird to me.

It seems to me that if you are just dating, there’s not really any relationship to commit to.

If I’m dating, the only thing I commit to is having a good time.

      Just my perspective.

    • I’m confused! But my take on dating is this...... It’s fun and playful time. If you end up liking the person and you decide to be exclusive then ok. Doesn’t mean the feelings are mutual tho. So as long as YOU are having fun do it regardless of any rules. I’m assuming your 40 or beyond so it’s YOUR life do what works for YOU!!!!

    • Yes I agree with all of these answers—the question was about the dating tips and some of the tips were a little bit of a mix on relationship and dating, of which I do make a distinction between the two as well.  So when one of the dating tips said “Commit to the relationship and not the person” I found that perplexing about what that was supposed to mean...did not mean to sound like a DINWIT, LOL.
