Q & A

What kind of exercising should I do if I work long hours with a two to three hour commute everyday?  I want to lose my tummy before it becomes anymore extended but I am totally bushed when I get home, plus my kids and husband are waiting for me to jump right in.  I can literally feel how unhealthy I am becoming.  I am 5 foot 5 and weigh 140 lbs so a fat tummy just won’t work.

    • How about 5 minute abs?

I used to do it religiously, and it worked like a charm.

I know how you feel, tired, frustrated and without time for yourself. I know that we have whole bunch of responsibilities, but before you begin resenting everyone around you, step back, regroup and see what can you do to change the life style that you have.
Some times small changes bring huge rewards.

      All the best,
      Yana

The best thing you can do first is to watch what you are eating. You can do five hundred crunches a day but if you aren’t careful about the kinds of food and the amount of food you eat you won’t be able to see the results of your work.
I know it’s difficult to find the time to get in the exercise. I try to get up and knock it out as early as I can...get it out the way.
Or while you are watching t.v. do some crunches or lunges during the commercials. And I’m with Annie, I’m a walker...I love it.

I’m sure after working all day and with such a long commute you feel worn out when you get home but doing small burst of exercise will give you more energy and eventually you will want to do more.Try breaking up your workout into smaller sessions. Maybe 10-15 mins. It’s not always about the quantity of time so much as the quality of your movements.
And lastly, remember that this is about you, not your husband and kids. You need to make them understand that you need to do this for you.
Hope I’m not sounding too preachy. I just understand.

    • Do you have any breaks that you can use to take a walk? I do that on my lunch hour, and it helps a lot. I bought a pedometer and try to walk five miles a day. I’ve read that people should strive for at least 10,000 steps a day.

I’ve also gotten the Wii fit, which is a fun way to do short aerobic exercises, or yoga, balance or strength training. And getting a variety of exercise DVDS (which you can rent first from your library, Netflix, or video store) and finding ones that you enjoy are other good ways to sneak in exercise.

Good luck and keep us posted! Thanks.

    • chrisdih.... great idea about the Wii fit. My son and his wife have Wii and I was playing it with them a couple of times...it really makes you sweat. They don’t have the fit but the one that really got me going was boxing...that was a real workout. I really liked it.
      Thanks

    • I have a flat tummy. I have had four kids. Don’t laugh this works , lay on the floor pull knee’s up so feet are flat and lift your butt off the floor. Yes it works! your butt will benefit from it too.

    • leeanne,... I do that too sometimes. You are keeping you balance by using and tightening your core muscles.
You can also kneel on all fours and draw your stomach muscles in like your pulling you navel into your back. Hold it for about 40 secs. then relax it and repeat. But don’t hold your breath while holding the muscle in.

    • almostfive0 is right about the nutrition thing—and it is not just about calories, either!  I have found that eating an 1800-calorie diet of junk will NOT give you the same results as 1800 calories worth of nutritious whole foods (lean protein, complex carbs, fruits and veggies, nuts and healthy oils).  The closer your food is to its NATURAL state, the better it is for you (AND for your looks!)

Of course exercise is also very important—but you cannot spot-reduce!  Try to get a total of 1 hour per day—I know that sounds like a lot but remember it does not have to be all at once!  If you can do 20 minutes of exercise first thing in the morning, go for a 20 minute walk at lunch, and 20 minutes when you get home, that totals an hour for the day.  If you cannot do 20 minutes then just do 10—whatever you can fit in!  A little bit of something is better than a whole lot of nothing!  Sound doable???

    • I used to think you couldn’t spot reduce either. Now I am! woohoo...and shamefully without exercise. I have lost 5 inches in the belly pouch area since mid Sept. No other inches lost except the torso. I am losing fat, not muscle.
I know I need to exercise, but this is pure leftover baby blubber that has been accumulating over the past 20 years. Now I am one inch and 3 lbs from my ideal goal.

    • Spot training won’t get rid of the tummy. Eating right combined with sustained, consistent cardiovascular exercise over a period of time will do it.

Believe me, I KNOW how long it takes. I’ve been working out 4-6 days a week since January, and although I lost 27 lbs I didn’t think my tummy was smaller.

You just have to be consistent. Do you have a stationery bike at home? Park it in front of the TV and ride it for at least 30 minutes (hard) every other night.

I strongly recommend Pilates too for core strength. You can strength the muscles (under the fat). You may not see the muscles at first, but over time as you build more muscle, and do more cardio the fat will start to melt away.

I also write down everything I eat. I eat very little carbs and spread them throughout the day. Before I knew it, I’d lost 3 inches off my waistline.

I lost almost 40 lbs doing low glycemic, but the tummy fat wasn’t budging. I have given birth to 12 kids. The tummy bulge just wasn’t interested in leaving. I am not a sedintary person, but don’t exercise as often as I should either. I started using a patented protein peptide product that targets fat loss. In the clinical trial those using Osolean lost 100 percent fat; the placebo group lost half fat, half lean muscle, even exercising.
I am all about eating right. I am a health nut, but getting back to a baseline of 20 years and 12 children ago wasn’t easy for me. I have finally convinced myself to ride the bike, and do crunches every day. When time is an issue, I just do the crunches.
