What did you think about last nights debate? Who was the winner? or Are we the people the losers?
IMHO, this was not necessarily a Town Hall Meeting...the questions sounded too scripted and didn’t allow the candidates to show their personalities...or allow the audience to respond or interact...it was just more of the same campaign trail rhetoric. I do believe that Obama was more detailed in his responses...he gave me a better feel for what he would do when he was President. I was uncomfortable the whole time with McCain...as he just repeated the same things he has been saying all along, with the assumption that every American is versed in politics and the Republican viewpoint.
Undecided voters want details at this point in the campaign...Obama succeeded in doing this...McCain really didn’t give us as much. At the end of the debate, I got up and said to husband (a McCain Supporter), I don’t know...McCain didn’t do what needed to be done tonight...I still don’t know what exactly he is planning on doing when he becomes President...but I do know what Obama will do...I don’t agree with some it...but I do know...McCain has to come back in the next debate with details...I don’t want to hear about his track record anymore...he needs to tell me what he’ll do in detail. I am sick and tired of the mud slinging.
I am still undecided...and believe it or not...I may be leaning toward Obama just because at least I know what will be coming...I just don’t know.
I think Obama was the winner although I did like McCain’s loan idea for the average Joe 6pack. Obama came across more in control. He looked more presidential than McCain. I like McCain but he makes it hard for me to vote for him. Instead of finger pointing he should start talking about his plan and give specifics.
I liked this type “platform” much better.
Even though the audience was of course chosen, it helped to keep my mind more alert since I was becoming sleepy.
I made a point of being “open minded” to both candidates and listened carefully to both.
I think what it boils down to, for me at least, is that they both have ideas for policies that could work... but
for me... it is the question of, who do I believe?
I personally relate more to John McCain. I looked at his eyes, his body stance, his gestures, his facial expressions, and I believe what he has to say.
I cannot for the life of me relate to Obama because I don’t see any real warmth in his face or eyes. For others, you may feel the opposite.
I agree with the worthless part. other than the McCain loan thing, it was more of the same. We need a New Party a third party to get these clowns focus. Yes McCain was very disrespectful calling Obama “That One” what the hell was that about. ” That one” He has a name and McCain knows it. The media is running this whole thing. they should just pick who they want, and be done with it already. The media want Obama so just kick bush out right now! and put the obama’s in.
It’s hard to judge who the winner is of a debate because a debate is supposed to be a discussion.
Last night’s “Town Hall” format was a disappointment because it wasn’t so much a discussion between the candidates and the audience as it was a moderated debate between the candidates. 90 seconds! Who can answer anything substantial in that time?
Funny, I kept wondering if Tom Brokaw (spelling of last night) was Dem. or Rep., and also if the audience was half and half. lol
Also, isn’t ironic how each of us view what we saw and heard differently. It fortified my belief in McCain.
I saw an article, or saw it somewhere that we might choose a candidate based on our own families and how we were raised. Hmmmmmmmm.....

I am a republican but you are correct in what you are saying. McCain tosses mud like a salad and said nothing. Obama give you an idea of what he will do that is more than McCain is willing to do. I was hoping to hear specifics from McCain but for some reason he just won’t do it. So fine, I will have to vote for Obama at least I know what Obama plan is more spending, bigger government, tax breaks and hikes but he got a plan and a lot of hope. McCain Keep the war, Keep the taxes the way they are and give a loan to the American home owner. Maybe! I wish I could talk with McCain and say SPEAK UP MAN SPEAK UP! I just can’t vote for a person with on plan or at least that is not willing to share that plan with the American public.
I agree with most of you on last night’s debate - it was boring and revealed very little new information. Part of the reason for that is what Shepherdess said - scripted and restricted and the lack of creative questions. The only new thing thrown out was McCain’s idea for buying out the bad mortgages and that certainly was not what anyone wanted to hear. Also, neither man acted presidential last night because they are Senators and they discuss not debate.
With all that being said, in my mind there is still no contest. Do we want socialism (listen for the government take-over references) even at the expense of having an adaptation of what we’ve had from Bush? Are we ready to turn over our country to someone who hasn’t proven himself at all in his short political history or someone who at least has experience and has crossed the aisle to bring about compromise (whether I agree with all of them or not)? Do we want a president who has questionable (at the least) associations with people such as Ayers, Wright, and Acorn to name a few? We actually know so little about Obama because he refuses to release many of his records, and what we do know from his writing, from his history in Illinois, and his 143 days in the Senate does not give me reason to trust and believe what he says. I have never been a McCain supporter because my views tend to be more conservative than many of his decisions, but the difference between these two men is much too stark to ignore.
I thought McCain again disgraced himself. In the first debate, he scarcely looked at Obama. This time, he referred to him as “that one.” How outrageous and insulting. Obama answered his questions with passion and candor. McCain didn’t refer to the middle class once, affirming his being out of touch with the majority of the county. I also was offended that he called a $3 million-dollar overhaul of a projection system for an auditorium that projects images of stars and planets for educational shows at Chicago’s Adler Planetarium “an overhead projector.” He’s so clueless it isn’t funny. I can’t wait for this election to be over and for him to go explore his many homes!
It is an overhead projector and for one I don’t agree that our tax dollars should go to things like that. Now is a time well no it’s always a time to watch our money 3million on this and that yet no health care and no bail out for the average Joe. I am tired of having to watch my pennies yet the government with its trillion of dollar spends it on crazy crap. I will never see that whatever it is in Chicago but I do think that all kid should have healthcare and school with qualified teachers. But I do agree with you that the show needs to come to an end. This election has become a sit com and I can’t wait for the season to end. McCain or Obama one is not any better than the other. At least I can say Obama is talking a tiny bit more than McCain.
You know I didn’t watch it! I’ve already made up my mind - although more because I think Sarah Palin is awesome than I like McCain. I’ve become so discouraged with the electoral process & the half-truths & downright lies told by both sides. . . and the bias of the mainstream media. . . that to watch caused already high blood pressure to rise even more.
I guess at my ripe ‘chrono-age’ I’ve become jaundiced or a “tied-in-the-wool” sceptic. They run, get nominated, commercial us to death, tell us what they think we want to hear because they think we‘re too stupid to know better & we elect.
They end up doing what they want to do regardless of what “we the people” want or what’s best for the country.
Now that’s spoken like a true sceptic!
What can we do about this? how do we change this in our elections? What can we do as a group to change the situation?
We can complain to the cow come home but what do we do to make our opinions heard?
I had conversation yesterday with 2 very intelligent women about the entire situation. One of them said she felt a “revolution” coming on. I jokingly made mention of the “Boston Tea Party“. She’s from Boston and asked “do you know how small that ship is? It’s tiny & look what that small incident by a small group of men did to turn things around!”
Well I don’t know about a “revolution“, but I think a small group of determined American’s who don’t want to see our democracy & way of life go the way of socialism & less n’ less freedom CAN make a difference.
I was a strong supporter of Fred Dalton Thompson (still have his sticker on my car) and he has formed a PAC (political action committee) to insure conservative principles remain intact (like the 2nd amendment, freedom of speech, etc). I joined it and give a little money each month. I think small organizations like this with whom we can have much more contact and input may be the way to go short of “revolution“.
I was irritated with Obama’s smug smile in the background while McCain was up walking around. I had to pick my boys up from football practice an wound up listing to the majority of the debate (yes NOT a “town hall meeting“) on the radio. It was MUCH better on the radio without all the distractions of body language. After all it is WHAT they are saying that is important.
One question; What exactly has Obama done to even deserve the Presidency? What has he done for me, or YOU?
I just got this in my regular email if anyone want to look at it [Link Removed]
This is McCains loan program for the housing blah blah blah.
I would run for congress but I am not that good of a lair. the whole thing is that the way to make a difference seems impossible. To talk to a politican is close to impossible. I have called my congress man to speak my mind on the big issues but I don’t get a return phone call or even a letter or email to say ok I got the message. The media is the same thing unless there is an angry mob ready to kill the media doesn’t want to cover it. It just seems so hopeless.
I was bothered by McCain’s arm movements and stiff walk until I learned that it’s due to virtually little or no medical care during the early years of his imprisonment as a prisoner of war. Apparently both arms were broken & not set - just put in casts & that’s why he can’t raise his arms higher than his shoulders. Same thing for his stiff-legged walk.
I just read an “anti-Sarah Palin” letter on another site that made me see “red“. What makes women on both coasts of the country think they are the only women in the country & can speak for the rest of us in the vast “flyover land” of this great nation.
Ahah. . .I’m about ready to go on a ‘rant’ & better stop while I’m ahead!
Go ahead rant it good for you. God knows it works for me when I need to rant.
What about Jay Leno refering to Palin’s high heeled boots as “Stripper shoes” the other night? Imagine if we turned tail that way on Obama or his wife. We’d all be racist pigs. Why is it alright to be a sexist pig?
Dear Squeaky11,
To whom, exactly, is it clear that her child should be in bed?
Is it the metal steps to which you object?
Is it a bad thing for Governor Palin to keep her infant with her at all times? That’s the first time I’ve ever heard it’s not good for a breastfed infant to be with his or her mother.
And, apropos of our “founding fathers“, I think historians might quibble with the notion of “exuberance” at either the signing of the Declaration or at the Constitutional Convention. I believe one of them said, “We hang together or we hang separately“, which is not exactly an exuberant declaration.
Finally, in regards to a president’s cabinet, are you saying it’s a good idea to look at the advisors with whom the candidate surrounds himself or herself? If so, we would be better served looking at Obama’s relationship with Wright and Rezco instead of Palin’s relationship with her infant.

For the first time in my lifetime I am scared for our country. We have terroism in the lurking, bad economy, hidden groups that support “who knows what,“and a public, in my own humble opinion that seems to turn a blind eye, and refuse to learn as much as they can about each candidate. ( I refuse to debate the later.) I am given hope that the women who post here ARE really looking at the details of each candidate, as well as researching to find answers to the “hidden” agenda of each candidate. I am encouraged that Americans aren’t loosing their voices... and if need be WOULD stand UP to raise their voices LOUD and CLEAR. Is it too late for organized groups for people like ourselves to challenge any person who deciedes to run for President? It is,afterall OUR COUNTRY that they are going to lead!!!! The government has chosen the way each candidate stands before the public to be “interviewed” if you will. I know what I am saying is a bit “messy” in content, but so many thoughts run through my mind. I would like to see the public hold the candidates accountable to a stronger debate in which Americans can ask anything and everything in a debate to each candidate, as well as seeing
Americans making a STRONG stand at ANY point of the election, and even once the President has become elected.
America needs to take back THEIR country and find a way to
hold the President AND Cabinent accountable for BAD choices. In lieu of that, we should be made aware of what policies are being voted, as well as the outcome, and who voted “for or against” said policies. The public has become lazy and allowed the government to make policies without our knowledge. As I said, it is time America held their government accountable. How that is possible, I’m not sure. It would certainly take a considerably more knowledgable person than myself to make such changes.
I small part of me has to believe that the candidate that I see as potentially worthy of running this country. What choice do I have? Sad isn’t it? What would Americans do if there were Presidential candidates that they KNEW were
like Hitler? Would "we" as Americans sit back and "JUST" pick one? Pretty darn scary.... but this is how I view what has become of our voice as Americans. When do WE get our voices back ??? At what point will we NEED to raise our voices.... AND sadly.... WILL WE?????
Lordy be don’t be too hard on me... it is early and I may not have made any sense at all !!! It is just so strongly on my mind this morning. Thank you for listening !!!
I think that we need to stop the madness. I don’t like that for the last 2years we been in this election. The democrats and the media started this whole thing with Hill are you running Hill are you running. Who did not think that Hillary would not run? Then Obama came into the picture and the mayor of NY. Please if a Mayor can run for president why not me? This has to stop! I don’t agree with primaries. Let all that want to run be on the ticket. BUT! They must start running only 6month before election. I did not have a choice between Obama or Hillary or Edwards. I am a registered Republican and in the state of Florida I can vote in that primary. I would of like a voice in the Democrat side. But that choice was not given to me. I don’t have a problem with any of these people. I could careless if they are Black white Hispanic poor rich smart dumb. I just want a choice and to have it watered down by each party is sickening. I would have liked to have voted for Hillary or Edwards both with a long record in Washington. I would have liked to have voted for Romney or Ron Paul both outsiders. I say we as a group start movement. We have an opportunity here. Let's write what we want to change. it seem as if we all agree on the basic principles and then let all get signature and present it to our representatives to make true change. Let’s face the facts Obama will win. I don’t think he is the best choice but we are hungry for change and it seems that he the only choice. I don’t like the fact that some of us compare him to Hitler. What has he said to make you have that comparison? I don’t think that in 4years the constitution will be over turned and rewritten to change our nation to a socialist nation. Congress is a two term seat. Let’s give congress which is a demarcate congress and it’s democrat president a chance if in two years things don’t get better than we replace them with new faces. I know that we feel comfortable writing whatever we want but do we feel comfortable enough to talk to our neighbors and our friends and our family and the folks in our place of worship. To all stand up when we have to.
I just want to make it quite clear that I personally did not
reference Obama to Hitler. NOR do I feel there is, in my humble opionion, a similiarity. I am not sure if you were referencing what I had said in my post, or from others post.
However,I do have some strong opinions about Obama, but would not post them online publically. And, again... my OWN personal opinion is that this country could “in a heart beat,” change from what it is now.
And do I personally feel comfortable talking to friends, and neighbors as to my sincerely felt opinions out of concern. YES I DO! There is no time, like this time,to become involved.
I thank you all for your own personal opinions and for letting me tell you mine.
My intension was not to put you personal down I was addressing the group. As you have read several time the name Hitler has come up and I don’t think that this is fair to use that name with Obama or McCain even Bush. I was just stating that we need to each stand up and voice our views with others. Talk to people about voting and explain things so we can make a change. I am not a crazy fan of Obama but McCain is not giving me much to work with. The only thing I agree with Obama is that we need change. Again what come possibly happen that would be so bad if we did get Obama? What would be so bad if we got McCain. More of the Same! not because McCain would not work with congress I think he would be Congress won’t work with him. I don’t think we can take 4 year of more doing nothing or at the least 2 more year of doing nothing. This is what we are give Obama or McCain. Not the best choices I must say but what are we to do not vote? That is not going to help the situation.
Frankly, I wish we could get rid of all of them, everyone down on the hill and just start over again. Many of them are there for the wrong reasons at this point...POWER, and that is all. Do any of you really think that at the end of the day they give a rats ass about any of us...please.
It is too bad that there are so many people out there that could really make a change, but without money they will never run; sad for us all.
So at the end of the day we have to pick someone who will do the least harm...we all have our own personal opinions on that, and we will agree to dis-agree. There are no easy answers. But for me, I don’t, and will not vote for someone because they will be the 1st of something, and there are many who will. I want to go to bed at night and not worry about a bomb being dropped on my head (I live half of the time in NYC, and know that fear all too well.) or as a small business owner being taxed to death. We are just making it now.
So lets stop all of the name calling...we are never going to agree. Some of you can’t even have a logical conversation on this subject as you hate the other candidate and their running mate beyond reason. I know I will get nasty little notes on this comment...I will not respond...sorry I just can’t get worked up over this like some of you. I will go and vote for the person I feel will do the best job for me and family. And that is all that any of us can do.
Thank you What40 for clarifying the Hitler statment. I appreciate it ! VBG
And Annie..... what you said really hits home for me~!
Maybe some day we will admire our President for how he leads our country.
Well said Terri !!!!!!!!
HEY... (being a tad bit silly here) we should start a campaign for the next Presidential election. The campaign group would take the names of those who are wanting to run for President, but cannot afford to do so. Next, address the nation via this group as to who they would elect. Lastly, start a campaign fund to support the leading candidate the public has chosen. Of course if there is NO leading choice then the last step would be not take place.
