Q & A

Why has someone found a newborn baby naked with the cord still attached at the store I shop at?

DELAWARE, Ohio—A Delaware County judge granted temporary  custody of an abandoned newborn boy to the county Jobs and Family Services department.

Juvenile Court Judge Kenneth Spicer ruled this afternoon after a brief hearing.

The boy is expected to be placed in a foster home, where he likely will stay even if law-enforcement authorities are able to locate his parents, said Sue Ware, a social services administrator. The agency’s first choice would be to place the child with a relative, which is difficult in this case because the child’s identity is unknown.

“We’ve received a couple calls where people were inquiring about how they could adopt the child,” said Mona Reilly, the county’s job and family services director.

Investigators with the Delaware County sheriff’s office continue to search for the child’s parents. A woman found the baby lying in the grass yesterday along Owenfield Drive near the Meijer store off Rt. 23 in Lewis Center. She called 911 at 1:22 p.m.

Allison Passewitz, 24, of Powell, wrapped the crying newborn in a sheet and waited with him until emergency crews arrived. The boy, found naked with his umbilical cord still attached, was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. Doctors said he was healthy

    • These stories always amaze me. First off, who is able to have a baby in public without drawing attention? If the baby wasn’t actually born in the store, how were they able to walk around after doing that, and bring a baby in unnoticed? Then, how is someone pregnant and then they go home and are not pregnant?

    • Thank God the child was alive and unharmed! I hope they find whoever did this. But how in the world would you be able to track someone down?

    • Well, at least it was still alive!  Hopefully a nice family will be able to adopt it.

    • OMG, that is chilling, I’m guessing a scared teenager or drug addict, either way I feel for this poor baby, what a sad start in life, but at least he was found safe.

    • Thats awful .... it’s strange recently there have been a spate of stories in the press of people who were abandoned like this trying to trace their parents and going back to the place they were abandoned with the press - but these children were abandoned in the 50’s and 60’s not 2009 !

I know in Germany you can post your child through a hatch at a family service office ..... I think it’s just cruel so many unanswered questions when your growing up and mainly asking why you were dumped

    • The sad thing is it happens all the time, it makes me sick. How do woman take a living, breathing, gift from God and discard them like a piece of garbage. I will never understand especially  when we have “Safe Surrender” laws that let someone surrender the child at any church, fire dept., police station or hospital with NO questions asked!
