Q & A

What was the very first chapter book you selected on own and read as a child?

For me, I was six or seven.  My mother took my brother to the public library in our community, got us library cards, and set us loose to explore.  I selected, “Little House in the Big Woods“, by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  I went on to read every book she wrote.

    • I don’t remember.  I went to a small school, two grades to each classroom.  Our library was a big cupboard in the corner and I pretty much read everything in there at least once.

No doubt my first chapter book was a  horse story.  I was also into historical figures even back then, I remember books about Sam Houston, Dan‘l Boone, etc.

Don’t remember reading Laura Ingalls Wilder in school, but I saved all my birthday money and aquired the complete works over the years.  My daughters still have them.

    • I think it was the “Little House” series. I just couldn’t wait to get to the library and get the latest book of that series. I used to read them over and over again and I actually bought some of that series for my neice when she was little.

    • I don’t really remember but I think it could have definitely been the Little House series as well. I remember checking them out of the school library...loved them and loved the tv series too! I still watch it! happy

When I was a little older I remember reading all of the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy mysteries.

    • I loved the Nancy Drew books.

But the first chaptered books I read were the Maida series, by Inez Haynes Irwin.  They were my mother’s books that my grandmother had saved.

I think the first one was written in the 20’s.
