Q & A

Did anyone watch Opera today? Her show was titled“What Would You Dare To Live Without?”

They followed 2 families and 1 woman for a week to see if they could live just on the bare need’s. No tv,no eating out, no take out, no wasting food, no shopping for anything other than food, you can’t buy/eat junk food, you can’t buy bottled water, but had to use a reusable bottle . The children could only use the computer for homework. They couldn’t crank up the heat/lower the air.No use of cellphone’s.They have to recycle, turn off water when not in use. Only take 5 minute shower’s,turn off light’s when not in use.No video game’s.You can’t use any paper or plastic products.

So do you think you could do it?

    • I think I could do it .I really do.

I don’t watch much tv. NASCAR race’s and program’s that really interest me. Usually shows that I can learn from  such as this Oprah show today.I already take the 5 minute shower’s, I don’t buy junk food .I eat leftover’s, I drink out of a reusable bottle,I recycle ,I seldom buy NEW clothes ,they are usually second hand . To me they are just as good if not better, I turn off the water while I’m brushing my teeth, I turn off light’s when not in use ,I use power strip’s , power saving light bulb’s.Rather than use AC constantly I open the window’s and use ceiling fan’s. .In the winter I don’t crank the heat ,I put on another layer of clothes..You get the idea. It’s easy to do .It’s just a life style.

    • I agree.  I grew up in a very modest household, and these practices were just a part of every day life.  In fact, I feel sort of guilty now if I don’t listen to my inner voice telling me to conserve resources.

It’s crazy how materialistic and wasteful our society has become.  Seems now the time has come for things to balance out the other direction for a while.

    • I don’t think I can do the 5 minute shower thing. I need more time then that to wash my hair and shave.
I can definitly do the not eating out or having fast food, then I would maybe lose a couple pounds then happy
No tv or computer and cell phone for a week, I can do that.
But no paper products? Does that Include toilet paper? what the heck??ohhhh

    • I would love to try and see if I can do it and I think I could be successful at it if I gave it my all. I think we live such spoiled lives these days. I always listen to stories my parents tell about what they didn’t have growing up like going to the outhouse and my mother being afraid to sit on the toilet which was basically a hole in the ground and being afraid of the snakes that would be in there. And I don’t know what they used for toilet paper...I’m going to ask them.

    • estatic I'm with you Terri...you're right... 'It's a lifestyle' some live & some think I'm just a homebody, but I do A LOT of those same things! Living on a ranch, one gets used to doing without...or should I say doing things a bit more conservatively...I don't even like to leave the house unless I have to, I stock up on groceries for like 2 weeks...& I'm one of those girls who grew up camping, rough'n it & loved it...as far as toilet paper goes... well... I've definitely had times where I had to be creative...lol... but I won't get into details...LOL!! I did a lot of that with my kids too when they were growing up.. but they've become city girls for the most part... it's funny thou as they get older it's beginning to come back to them.  I'm a survivor in any way I need to be, I guess it's the cowgirl in me!happy

    • Some of those things would be a challenge.  I’m a computer junkie..and I admit it.  Five minute showers...I can do...and opt to take baths instead when needed...and I’m not a bath type of girl either.

I recently was asked by my electric company,  South Carolina Electric & Gas to take a survey for them..which I am on a board that takes these surveys.  This latest one asked me if I SIGNED a contract and PAID a little extra to be a part of this program, would I consider having my power company turn off different things in my house during the highest peaks foor 15 minutes a day.

This is my thoughts on that.  I think it would be great...BUT...and it’s a big BUT...I DON‘T WANT ANYONE ELSE HAVING ANYMORE CONTROL OVER ME SUCH AS THIS.  I think it’s a grand idea..but I will cut it off...not the electric company.  Folks...I’m all for “being green“....research it and strive to be more green everyday...but..at the same time...I don’t want another entity having control over me...my home...my family.  I have mixed feelings on this.  And why should I pay them to save ME more money.
Soon..the government will start to have control over our power...and ya’ll it’s coming...and then soon..they will be telling YOU when you can have air...heat...etc.
Does anyone else see the writing on the wall????

I think we are a very very wasteful country..and we all need to do a better job of being CONSERVATIVE...learning to eat properly...and exercising.

Sorry to add my little SCE & G rant...but...it is about saving energy.

Chocolate isn’t considered junk food, is it?

    • I would be willing to give it a shot but can’t say for sure how long I would last. I have gotten better about conserving with the lights, heat and water with the exception of my shower. I couldn’t do a 5 minute shower. I have cut back on my shopping and really don’t eat junk food. Only go out to dinner once in a while. No toilet paper? No Kleenex? What do you use??tongue out

When Oprah said no use of paper/plastic product’s she was talking about paper plate’s , towel’s and cups (paper, plastic,Styrofoam)and no plastic silverware.

So who here would be willing to take the challenge ? The Fab 40 What Would You Dare To Live Without Challenge? HOWEVER our one exception is that we could use the computer so that we can check in and tell how it’s going.

it’s the conditioner I put in my hair...that‘a good excuse..
our thermo sits at 78 and during the winter we turn it off...
hmmm no going out to eat? that means no steak n shake booo!!
      wow no cell?
ok..this is not going so well...I can do without the cell phone until about 9pm...that’s when the texting begins...

the lights are a big thing with me...if I am not in that room they are not on..same with everything else...I keep 1 light lit above the stove at all times but otherwise if I am not in there the room is dark.

It would be a challenge for me, but I would like to see if I could do it for just a week...
