    • If the lawyer is not away on vacation or on family emergency, I’d say time to change...

    • Regardless the excuses like public officials you pay him or her for their service, the least they should/could do is have the profesionalism to return the call. If this kept happening, like screws at the hardware store they are a dime a dozen. Call someone else.

    • We have an attorney like that now and yes, it is very frustrating! He is a darn good attorney but waits until the last minute to do everything and takes him forever to get back to you if he does at all. Sometimes he’ll have his secretary call. He is working on something for us now but we decided that after this is done we are getting another attorney. Gave him too many chances.frown
Can you go to his office? If you can’t get anywhere I would find another attorney. Get recommendations from people if you don’t know another one to use.

    • No, I must say my attorney is always just a phone call away. If he is out of the office, he ALWAYS calls me back that same day, even if it is in the evening.

Sounds to me like you should look for a new one. happy

    • OMG...YES!
Both divorces I had HORRIBLE lawyers....never called, or answered calls or emails. Had to remind them to return a form to my X’s lawyer 8 TIMES...and then his lawyer actually called there to have it faxed over.

And they get PAID for this service...???

    • I never had that problem, but I’d like to recommend Prepaid Legal. One can always reach this office and then they direct you to an reputable lawyer or firm.

    • Make an appointment with your attorney through the secretary.  Express your concerns about him/her not returning your telephone calls.  If your attorney doesn’t respond in a genuine manner, tell him/her that you would like to retain other counsel and wait will they get your file together for you to take with you, as well as any remaining retainer balance.  However if your file is enormous, you may not be able to wait for it.  Attorneys typically copy the file so that they are able to keep a copy should they ever need to defend themselves over a file.

I work for a busy family law attorney and there is no excuse for unreturned phone calls.  Sometimes attorneys get extremely bogged down in court or with cases that demand a lot of time, but they should still take a few minutes and return your call.  If they are unable to, their secretary/assistant should; at least to let you know what is going on and why the attorney hasn’t called you back.

Sometimes it is a slow process, but you should feel satisfied with your attorney and/or the staff.

    • I agree with everything said.  You deserve better than what you‘re getting.  You say you can’t afford a new lawyer, but you’ll have to pay this one when/if he ever calls.

    • Seriously Renee...threaten leaving. If they want your money, they will get on the ball. If they don’t then their not going to do you any good anyway and it’s best you know now and move on.

    • I haven’t had any trouble with my lawyer.  He was very good about returning my calls.  However, he also handled my daughter’s divorce and I gotta say, she was ready to kill him.  Could never get hold of him, etc.
