Q & A

My mother has been diagnosed in mid-stage Alzheimer’s Disease.  Her doctor told her if she had stayed on the anti-depressants she had put my Mum on 5 years ago that her brain would not have atrophied so much.  Have you heard this before about anti-depressants and alzheimers?

My mother has had alzheimers for over 11 years.  I have never heard of this.  I would think that the anti-depressant is used to help them stay calmer during their confusion.

My mother has been on a drug called ARicept.  It helps with memory...and is very good.

Talk to the Alzeheimers Association for more detail and research.

    • I have had depression issues on and off for years and have stopped taking meds as I have it under control (with a very few low-points) through nutrition and progesterone cream.  Should I be worried do you think?  I am thinking maybe I should just go back on the meds to guard against brain deterioration.

My grandmother - mother’s mother - also had Alzheimer’s and we believe she may have been bi-polar.  I have two other sisters who take meds for depression.....

What have you heard on this subject?

    • I have never heard of this either...the antidepressants just alleviate a lot of stress for the person struggling with Alzheimer, and we found with our mom that the less stress she had the happier she was. She responded and interacted better, ate, and felt more comfortable in her frustrating world.  Our Dr. never, never, said that antidepressants would have delayed anything! Time for a new doc?

    • I took your advice and did some research....I should have done before!  Seems that docs do think there may be a connection on the speed of brain atrophy that leads to Alzheimer’s...
